1943

It had been four months since Daphne or Steve saw Bucky. He had written of course but letters just weren't the same as seeing him every single day.

Steve still hadn't gotten over the fact that they wouldn't let him enlist. He tried to pretend like he was okay with staying home with his sister hiding the fact that he'd been trying numerous times.

He used different hometowns and different last names, hoping that they'd eventually get desperate enough to accept him.

Daphne tried to keep herself busy so she didn't have to focus on the fact that just like millions of other women, her husband was gone and she had no idea when she'd see him again.

With most of the men gone, more jobs had opened up and Daphne had two of them. But today was a Saturday which meant she had the day off.

It was usually a day spent with Steve. Trying to distract themselves from the fact that everything was different and Bucky was gone.

As they walked down the street, Daphne spotted the crumpled-up enlistment form in his pocket, the 4F peeking out.

"What the hell?" she mumbled, stopping in her tracks as she stared down at it. "You've been trying again?"

Steve turned to her with a confused look on his face. "What?"

"I can see the paper stickin' out of your pocket, Steve," she said, groaning as his cheeks grew pink in embarrassment. "We're you just not gonna tell me?"

"There's nothing to tell. Obviously, they said no again" Steve said.

"Oh, yeah, obviously. And what if they had said yes, huh? Were you just gonna spring it on me that you enlisted? Just go home and tell me you're leaving tomorrow and that I'll probably never see you again?" she asked.

"No, I had a plan, okay. I know they give you a few days before you leave so I had until then to convince you that I'd be okay" he said.

"Of course. Steve, the man with a plan. Well, that's a horrendous plan because there's not enough time in the world for you to ever convince me that this would be a good idea" she scoffed.

"Well, if you'd just-"

"I shoulda known I'd find you two arguing in the middle of the street."

Both of them turned around and Daphne nearly fell out as she looked at the man in front of her. "Bucky" she sighed, practically falling into his arms, pulling him into the tightest hug she could muster.

"Look at you," he said, pulling away enough so that he could look down at her face. "A sight for sore eyes."

"When did you get back?" Steve asked as Daphne moved aside so they could greet each other.
