After helping Natasha get Barton to the infirmary, Daphne sat with Steve, Tony, and Fury in the conference room.

"These were in Phil Coulson's jacket. I guess he never did get you to sigh them" Fury said, tossing the trading cards onto the table.

Steve and Daphne frowned looking down at the Captain American cards, covered in blood. Coulson's blood.

"We're dead in the air up here. Our communications, the location of the cube, Banner, Thor...I got nothing for you" Fury sighed. "I lost my one good eye. Maybe I had that coming."

Daphne shifted uncomfortably in her seat.

"Yes, we were going to build an arsenal with the Tesseract. I never put all my chips on that number, though, because I was playing with something even riskier" he said.

"There was an idea, Stark knows this, called the Avengers Initiative. The idea was to bring together a group of remarkable people, to see if they could become something more. To see if they could work together when we needed them to, to fight the battles that we never could. Phil Coulson died still believing in that idea. In heroes."

Tony stood up abruptly, standing there frozen for a moment before he walked away.

"Well, it's an old-fashioned notion," Fury said.

Seeing Steve going after him, Daphne followed him.

"Was he married?" Steve asked, finding Tony just staring blankly ahead.

"No. There was a, uh, cellist, I think" Tony said.

"I'm sorry. He seemed like a good man" Steve said.

"He was an idiot," Tony told them.

"Why? For believing?" Steve asked.

"No, for taking on Loki alone," Tony said.

"Not everyone is okay with just sitting back and watching," Steve said.

"He was out of his league" Tony scoffed. "He should have waited. He should have..."

"Sometimes there isn't a way out, Tony" Steve said.

"Right, I've heard that before" Tony mumbled. "Is this the first time you lost a soldier?" Steve asked.

"We are not soldiers!" Tony snapped, obviously much more upset about Coulson's death than he wanted to admit. "He made it personal."

"That's not the point," Steve said.

"That is the point. That's Loki's point. He hit us all right where we live. Why?" Tony asked.

"To tear us apart."

"Yeah, divide and conquer is great, but he knows he has to take us out to win, right? That's what he wants. He wants to beat us, he wants to be seen doing it. He wants an audience" Tony said.
