(VALFER'S POV)
I was walking in one of the hallways of Fabian Ebreo Hospital with my hands inside my pockets, when I met Van on the way.
He stopped from walking, so I stopped, too.
"You're helping us now. That's great," I uttered, nodding my head. I prevented myself from sounding too sarcastic.
"I was paid to do it, okay?" he explained, crossing his arms over his chest. "I didn't know how Danyl Soledad knew me, basta bigla niya na lang akong nilapitan at kinausap. I would have said no dahil bakit ba, anong pakialam ko sa inyo? But he offered me something that he unexpectedly knew I couldn't resist."
I couldn't help but to let out a sarcastic smile. "Like money."
He scoffed. "It's easy for you to reject that kind of offer because your family is freakin' rich. You can buy everything you want. You can go wherever you go."
Nawala ang ngiti ko. He really did it for money. As far as I knew, he was living here in Institute Center alone. Wala siyang binubuhay na kamag-anak, sarili niya lang.
"Then how come you're helping us now? Hindi ka natatakot na baliktarin ka niya?" My brows slightly furrowed.
"He already gave me the money and there's no way na babawiin niya 'yon. At ano namang gagawin niya sa akin? Kill my loved ones?" He laughed. "The only way he can hurt me is by killing me. And do you think I can be killed by someone like him?"
"So, you decided to turn your back on him and help us?" Because that doesn't sound right to me.
"Well, that's the only way I could survive." He let out a brief laugh. "Hindi ka ba informed na nakakatakot banggain ang pamilya mo? I would be more scared of your family than Danyl Soledad."
Really? Is that the real reason? I kept my eyes on him for few moments before nodding. "Then, you should really do it. You wouldn't want seeing my father frustrated just because you waste his time."
"Are you threatening me?" Nagtaas siya ng kilay.
I might be.
"Why would I threaten you? It's a friendly advice." I shrugged my shoulders.
Bumuntong-hininga siya at umiwas ng tingin. "Look, I'm sorry, okay? I'm sorry for what I did to you. I had no choice. What did you expect me to do after you caught me? I just did what I thought was the right thing to do at that moment."
