when you wake up (i'll be there)
vancouverbby

Summary:

jungwon stands up. he leaves his phone at the table, his third glass of water untouched. he's numb as he digs through the closet for a change of clothes. he's silent as he walks to the bathroom and locks the door behind him. he's dry-eyed as he switches the shower on and wriggles out of his night clothes.

but then he steps into the stall under the spray of water and the intrusive thoughts come rushing in in the same manner.

Work Text:
When Jungwon's alarm goes off, he mutes it immediately.

Half his face smushed into the pillow, hand gripping his now silent phone, Jungwon blearily recalls his hyungs asking him how he does it- consistently waking up as soon as his alarm sounds. He doesn't really know. I'm a light sleeper, he's told them before, which made Niki snicker something along the lines of Couldn't be Jay hyung, which resulted in a wrestling match that started on the couch, continued on the floor, and ended with everyone in tears of laughter.

Anyway. More than being a light sleeper, Jungwon promised himself to be the first one up shortly after he was announced as Enhypen's leader. It just seemed natural at the beginning, plus, it was an exercise he'd heard leaders of other groups mention before, and it seemed like a good idea.

Sleep is a precious thing, and it's certainly been a rough couple of weeks. Promoting season is no joke. Every night, when the seven of them shuffle in from various shootings, recordings, performances, or activities (it's endless, really), it has become a general routine of scraping together something to eat for those who are hungry, cycling in and out of the shower, and crashing in their respective bunks with mumbled goodnights for a solid seven hours before everything starts up again. Needless to say, Jungwon considers it a small sacrifice to force himself out of bed so that he can be fully awake and available before urging the others up for the day.

Detangling his legs from his comforter, Jungwon manages to roll out of bed without smacking his head on the top bunk. Minding his footfalls in the dark room, he makes his way out into the kitchen, switches on the light, and grabs the glass he left on the counter last night. He's downing his second cup of water when the telltale sign of the front door scraping open catches his attention.

Huh, he thinks to himself. It couldn't be anyone but one of their managers, but...

His heart lurches painfully in his chest. Did he somehow set the wrong alarm? Are they going to be late? The thought flushes panic through his system, but when their manager's face pokes around the corner he doesn't look particularly surprised to see only Jungwon up and about.

"Goodmorning," he smiles at Jungwon, stepping out from the hallway, face mask tucked under his chin.

Jungwon returns the greeting, though he thinks his own smile's a little too thin to be convincing. "Please tell me we're not running late."

"No, no," the older man reassures him with a chuckle. "There were some technical issues so we're rescheduling today's filming for next week."

"Oh," is all Jungwon can think to say, caught off guard.
