Standing in front of this building never seizes to make me feel small. The title of Haufman and Levine was staring down at me for the last 20 minutes as I debated entering the building.
The mediation hearing wasn't set to happen for another 3 weeks and Jonathan conveniently had a bunch of work pile up that he can no longer see Paige at the agreed times. Meaning... the only work around is to drop and pick up Paige from my mothers so I can go to work. The minute he said that, I knew he was lying. He just didn't want to see me until the hearing.
I couldn't wait that long. I had never done something like that before and I wanted to know what he wanted out of this. I needed to understand what the hell was going through his head.
As I finally decided to enter I looked around finding there was a long marble counter that had 3 separate receptionists behind on the phone. Thankfully the one I wanted was empty. When the receptionist looked up her face lit in recognition.
"Mrs. Carso, It's so good to see you. It's been forever, I didn't know you were coming."
I smiled warmly at her, "It's good to see you too, Aisha. The hospital keeps me very busy but I wanted to surprise him and take him out for lunch."
"Oh that's so sweet of you. Let me get you a pass."
"Thank you." I sweetly smiled in her direction as she printed me out a visitors pass to get anywhere I needed within the building.
It's true I used to come around a lot. We'd go out to lunch...talk, that was when things were simpler. We both were just starting out at our respective careers; running around frantically trying to impress the bosses and by some grace of God we were able to find time in our schedule to sneak off and something to eat together. But then things changed; I started logging more hours at the hospital, he started working for the next promotion and everything we used to do just stopped.
The numbers on the elevator weren't moving fast enough as I tapped my foot waiting for the ding to alert me that I was on my designated floor. I strutted along the halls making several turns hoping my memory was serving me right, until I saw the door I wanted. My nerves were bubbling up again but I couldn't let them take over.

I noticed his assistant typing away on his computer. When he looked up, his eyes held recognition but clear uncertainty.
"Hello."
"Mrs. Carso." He stood meeting my eyes. "He didn't say anything about you stopping by." His tone almost sounds in a panic.
"He's unaware." I looked to the door "Is he in there?"
When he looked towards the door I could see that unsettling feeling return to his face. Without waiting for a response I move to the door and swing it open. Before me is Jonathan going over paper work looking overwhelmed. When I walked in more I turned my head to find the one person I was hoping I wouldn't bump into while I was here. She's standing by the bookshelf with papers in her hand stopping mid sentence when she noticed I came in.
The high heels, pencil skirt and blouse with not 2 but 3 top buttons undone was definitely a sight. So this is what he considers eye candy during working hours.
Both sets of eyes just stared at me with the same expression. Wide eyes with mouth slightly ajar.
They're still working together.. of course they're still working together what did you think was going to happen.
I didn't know how I would feel, seeing her for the first time after learning she was sleeping with my husband. Would I want to fight her? Scream? Yell? Cry?
