In this moment

I walked around the hotel room, searching for my left shoe when my phone ringed. I quickly grabbed it, answering it and adjusting it to my ear. "Hello?" I answer, still walking around the hotel room trying to find my other shoe. "Morning beautiful." Zack says. I couldn't help but smile, hearing his voice made me happy.

"Morning baby." I pump my fist into the air, finally finding my other shoe. "So what are your plans for today?" He asks. "Well it's Katie's birthday so me and her husband got a reservation to a very expensive restaurant and we're inviting some close friends of hers." As I talk to him I walk into the kitchen in the hotel room, pouring myself some coffee that I had started making before I started getting ready. "Sounds fun. I hope you have fun." He says.

"So what are your plans for today?" I ask. "Hmm first work and than some friends invited me out for a drink afterwards. Nothing too exciting." I can't help but laugh at how bored he sounded with his day. "I miss you." He adds. "I miss you too." I whisper, biting my lip. "I was thinking when you get back we can finally start looking for a house to buy. You know, trying just to really settle down." He says.

"I don't know babe, I mean with our wedding, wouldn't that be a bit expensive? Besides I don't even have a job." I add, sighing. I felt like a complete failure. Here I am living off of Zack. I felt like crap for it. "Don't worry about the money, I make a lot of it and you know that. And well you don't need a job, I'll always support you. It's sort of what a fiancé/husband does." He says.

"I know I just- I will get a job at one point." I can hear him sigh, slightly laughing at me on the other line. "Whatever makes you happy. Anyways I have to go, but call me later." He says. "Ya of course. I'll talk to you later, love you."

"Love you too, bye." With that I hang up the phone, slipping it in my purse. I take another sip of my coffee before heading out the door.

"Happy birthday!" I say happily to Katie, handing her her present. "What? You didn't have to get me anything. You're already taking me out to dinner and you flew in from Manhattan for me." She says, shaking her head. "Yeah well this is just part of all that." I shrug. She gives me a look before opening up the present. She pulls out the black lace dress I bought her. "Oh my god this is so beautiful!" She squeals.

"You'll wear it to dinner and I'll do your makeup." She smiles happily. "Thank you so much Allison." She takes me into a hug. "You are literally the best." I laugh at her remark. "Now go put it on so I can start getting you all dolled up." I push her towards the bathroom, her laughing at me.

I get out of the car, adjusting my plain black, long sleeved dress. I look up at the fancy restaurant. I couldn't help but wonder what made this restaurant so expensive. Maybe the scenery? "Wow this is a stunning place." Katie says, getting out of the car herself. "Well it better be, I wore heels for this." Heels have never been my thing.

I look over at Katie's husband. "Who are we waiting for? We can't get our table unless the whole reservation is here." I point out. "Umm I think just Adam and Nicole." My heart stops at his name. My whole body suddenly felt numb and I couldn't even think. I hadn't seen Adam in the last year. And I hadn't talked to him in 11 months.

We stopped talking over a fight we had, one I can't even remember. I just remember that it was huge enough for us to completely cut off contact with each other. "Oh there they are." Katie husband says, looking 2 cars behind us. "Leave it to Adam to show up fashionably late." Katie mutters, well using the side mirror of the car to fix her lipstick.

I look over at the black Mercedes Benz, watching as both the passengers and drivers door open. First Nicole walks out. Her now blonde hair slowly waving  as she turned and shut the door. My eyes quickly leave her frame, looking over at the drivers side where a tall figure came out of. He adjusted his tie before walking to the back door and opening it, bring out a small car seat.

That's when I lost my breathe. I felt as if I was ready to pass out. As if I'd rather die than be in this moment.
