Chapter 12

2 months of surviving on the road later.
Everyone one was sitting by a fire in the woods Edge was cuddling Sarah and everyone else was sitting there kinda awkwardly.
"We gotta find somewhere. Anywhere not just to hold up but to live." Skylar said
"It's getting colder, and we're not gonna make it when it starts snowing." Edge said
"I know guy, I'm just as worried as you guys." Carter said
"What about a store, we can fortify it and use the roof for defending the place." Denis said
What about a prison?" Sarah asked
"That seems like a terrible idea." Noah said
"Lucy any ideas?" Carter asked
"Nope." Lucy said
"The school." Carter said
"What?" Edge said
"Remember from the runs we used to go on. Wyatt was gonna break the windows but I told him not to. Good thing I did." Carter said
"That would be a good idea but we are like 60 miles away now, maybe before that wouldn't be too far but you know." Jim said
"We can do it, we've made it this far stopping at every town I'd say it would be a lot easier going straight through." Carter said
"Also it's pretty close to Denver. Who knows how filled with deadheads that place is." Edge said
"They didn't napalm Denver?" Lucy asked
"What?" Carter said
"They napalmed San Francisco." Lucy said
"You're from California?" Denis asked
"Yeah born and raised." Lucy said
"Wow." Denis said
"Anyway do you guys agree with the school plan?" Carter asked
Everyone agreed and they slept the night then the next morning they loaded up into two cars and headed toward Denver.
About thirty miles away they were stopped by a road block of cars.
"That's new." Skylar said
"Yeah." Carter said putting the car in park and getting out.
The group walked toward the blockade and six men jumped up from behind the cars, their guns aimed at the group.
"Drop you weapons and put your hands in the air." One man said
Everyone looked at Carter, he nodded and they put their weapons down and put their hands up.
"Ok everyone, big group here, yeah, you may out number use but you damn sure can't out shoot us." A man said walking toward them
"What do you want?" Carter said
"We want you shit. Simple as that. If not I'll kill you all." The man said
"We don't have anything to give you." Carter said
"I doubt that." The guy said
Carter looked down at his gun.
"Don't you even think about it, you pick the thing up you got five men firing into your group." The man said
"I'm telling you we're running low we don't have much I'm sorry we can't help you." Carter said
"Oh well then guess you guys have to die." The man said pulling his gun up.
"No! Anything I will do anything just don't kill them." Carter said
The man sat there aimed at Carter then he put his gun down.
"Alright you win, nope just kidding, you are gonna get information about the other groups in this area for me." The man said
"Other groups?" Carter said
"You must not be from around here huh. By groups I mean large groups not any rag tag survivors. I've seen groups big enough to be considered organizations and they all have their own thing, some are bad, like us, or some want to stop the bad people. I want you to introduce yourself to these large groups get inside info and bring it back to me." The man said
"Ok, what's you name and how can I find you." Carter asked
"Elliot, and you won't have to worry about finding us, we'll find you." Elliot said
"Well Elliot I'm Carter and I want you to know this is between me and you I'll get info about the groups they don't have to." Carter said
"Deal, I'll see you around Carter." Elliot said motioning for his people to move the cars so Carter and the group could get through.
They got back in their cars and headed through the road block slowly.
"Carter are you sure you can do this?" Skylar asked
"I won't have to we'll be so far away they won't even come looking for us." Carter said
They made it to the school and parked the cars in the back.
"Ok guys on me." Carter said before opening the door.
They walked in with flashlights on and the school was completely clear.
"Well it looks like we got us a nice place. We can sleep in the gym tonight and tomorrow we can board up the windows and people can have their own classrooms." Carter said
"I have a good feeling about this place." Sarah said
"So do I, I think we all do and I think that's what's gonna keep this place standing. We keep feeling good about it adding on to it and all in all creating a safe living place for us and anyone we find along the way." Cater said
They all laid down to sleep Carter sand Skylar were laying next to each other trying to go to sleep. Carter sighed to himself.
"Carter it gonna be fine. This place is a new chapter for us." Skylar said
"You think so?" Carter said
"Yes you made a good decision you always do." Skylar said
Carter rolled over and face her, they looked at each other for a minute before leaning in and kissing. Carter rolled over on top of Skylar as they were kissing. Skylar looked around.
"They're not gonna wake up, they are getting some much needed rest." Carter Said
