The Dead Rise

Chapter 20

"Shoot them all." Carter yelled
"That was the plan." Axel yelled
Carter peeked back up and shot another solider. The opened the front doors and everyone below Carter shot out into the soldiers.
Bullets were flying everywhere, then they started to get stuff done. First Edge hit a guy making him run for cover, then Denis killed one, then Noah hit one in the leg, Skylar hit two killing one, Sarah managed to hit one.
"Guys stop shooting!" Carter yelled
He noticed everyone was dead or injured, they had out gunned the Horsemen. Carter got down from his snipers perch and went to the middle of the compound.
"Thought we couldn't out gun you!?" Carter yelled to Elliot who was cowing behind a truck.
"I mean it's kinda hard to tell but I think we did." Carter yelled
"Ok, ok I'll come out just don't shoot me." Elliot said
"Why shouldn't I?" Carter said watching Elliot limp up he had taken a bullet to the leg.
"We can come back from this." Elliot said
"Bullshit." Carter said
"I can change, we can go our separate ways you'll never see me again." Elliot said
"Thanks for the offer but I'd much rather see you dead, just saying." Carter said
"What are you doing? Are you gonna shoot him?" Skylar asked
"I might." Carter said
"You probably should have." Elliot said aiming his gun up and shooting Sarah killing her.
"Noooo!" Carter yelled tackling Elliot knocking his gun away.
Edge ran over to Sarah and put her head on his lap.
"No." He said crying
Carter punched Elliot in the face multiple times before Elliot managed to jump back and pull out a detonator.
"I don't have anything left to live for, you killed my group, I'm shot so even if I get outta this alive I'll die out there. We rigged this place as soon as we got here I've just been waiting for my chance." Elliot said
"RUN!" Carter yelled and everyone ran for the door but Edge
Carter ran back and grabbed his arm.
"We need to go he's gonna blow this place!" Carter yelled
"I can't leave her." Edge said
"I did it and so can you!" Carter yelled pulling Edge this time Edge getting up and running.
"You two aren't making it out!" Elliot said
"What's your group without their fearless leader?!" Elliot said running to the door pressing the detonator
Carter and Edge ran out the door and the building blew up behind them sending them flying. They landed as rubble from the building fell to the ground. Carter regained his breath and saw the group running from debris.
"Get beneath the cars!" Carter yelled
The debris stopped falling and they climbed out from beneath the cars, there was almost nothing left of the building.
"Axel!" Carter yelled before falling to his knees.
Carter felt a hand on his shoulder.
"He's dead I saw him running he didn't make it out." Skylar said
They saw a truck drove away from the building.
"It's not over, Elliot made it out." Carter said
Carter looked over and saw Edge crying with Noah and Lucy there comforting him.
Denis and Jim walked over to Carter.
"We need to finish this." Denis said
"For Edge." Jim said
"We will." Carter said getting up and walking over to Edge.
"I'm sorry man." Carter said
"Why didn't you put a bullet in him?" Edge asked crying
"Don't put this on me, it was Elliot and we're gonna kill him for this." Carter said
"You don't know what it's like!" Edge yelled getting up in Carters face.
"Bullshit I don't know what it's like, I watched my wife get torn apart while she was still alive, while I was holding back her child screaming for her in agony, I never got to say goodbye, she turned into one of those things at least Sarah doesn't have to go through that!" Carter yelled
"I'm sorry man." Edge said sitting back down
"I just feel like she deserved better, like a proper burial or something." Edge said
"I know she did." Carter said
Edge got up and hugged Carter.
"Thank you, for being there for me even when I have those moments you see through them and know that I mean no harm. I mean anyone else would have punched me right there." Edge said
"I'll always be there for you, anything you need." Carter said
"How sweet." Skylar whispered to Noah.
"It's kinda bittersweet seeing the situation." Noah whispered back
"Well guys I guess it's time to get back to the school and get ready to end this thing." Carter said
They drove back to the school and settled in for the night.
Carter laid awake thinking about how Edge may have been right.
"You're blaming your self aren't you?" Skylar asked
"I think Edge was right if I would have put a bullet in him this would have been over and Sarah would still be alive." Carter said
"No Carter no matter what you would have did this is how it would have ended. We can't change the past all we can do is accept it." Skylar said
Jim walked into them gym locker room and put his gun to his head.
"Ahh I can't." He said bringing the gun down.
"This war, fighting others, watching people I love die it's just too much." Jim said to himself in the mirror.
He out the gun to his head again and pulled the trigger. The gun jammed.
"Fuck!" He yelled and punched the mirror. He walked out and put the gun down, he laid back down and went to sleep.
