~Chapter 13~

Clarence

She looked at the few bags gathered in the living room as she ran her hand through her messy morning hair. The day before yesterday, she asked her grandmother if she could go back to Washington, back to Eastern Washington Private Boarding School, back to her old life and – surprisingly – Lindy said yes. Clarence was to go back there sooner or later anyway.

And today was the day she was leaving.

Yawning, Clarence crashed on the couch. Strangely, Lindy hasn’t woken up yet – even though it was half an hour to ten ‘o clock. The girl rested her head on her palm, hoping everything would turn out okay. It felt different going back to her old home after just a month.

Suddenly, the door opened and Ami burst in, as if the condo was hers. She wrapped her best friend in a tight hug with a few tears in her eyes.

“Why do you have to leave?!” Ami wailed.

Clarence rolled her eyes at Ami for the millionth time, “We’ve been through this, Ami. I need to go back there. It’s my old home, and during summer, I’ll be back here. Come on, I miss Eastern.” A sly smirk made its way to Clarence’s lips. She was definitely thinking about Merilda.

“B-but I won’t be here in summer! You should go to camp with me!” Ami complained again. Clarence declined her offer of going to Demicamp with her. If the kids there found out who she was…it’ll be big trouble for her. Plus, her cousin and his best friend are going to be there.

“Ami, I told you, I’m not going. My decision is final.” she told her tightly, gripping Ami’s shoulders to keep her from bursting into tears.

“I’ll miss you, Clarence! You’re my one and only best friend!” Ami hugged her again.

“Ami, I won’t be leaving until lunchtime. Relax.” Clarence reminded her. She’ll miss Ami because she was her only best friend. She’ll miss the times they’ve talked and hung out. But Ami was just so melodramatic right now.

Ami forced out a smile, “Fine. I’ll eat lunch with you and be with you until you get on the limo.”

As if on cue, Lindy emerged from the kitchen and called out to the two girls, “I quickly cooked lunch. Hurry up and eat so you wouldn’t be late.”

The three ate in silence. Lindy and Ami knew that it was for the best that Clarence left. Some monsters attacked yesterday and – fortunately and amazingly – Clarence took them out singlehandedly, with the help of her powers, of course. She was going well in controlling the stars, though Lindy said it’s still going to take some more practice.

When they finished eating, Lindy turned towards her granddaughter, “Clarence, are you sure you’ll be fine?” she asked worriedly.

Clarence flashed an encouraging smile, “I’m going to be fine, Lindy. Don’t worry.”

Lindy nodded, “Okay, just Iris message us if there’s any problem.” Clarence made sure to bring her beloved bow and arrows, a few painting materials, a little prism and some golden drachmas for Iris messaging and also the book Mrs. Mackie gave her, which she studied every single page.

“Yeah, I will.” Clarence assured her.

“What about her powers?” Ami asked out of curiosity.

“I’ll practice every night, Ami. There’s a field and a forest just behind the school. There’ll be a lot of monsters to practice on,” Clarence said. She imagined Ash and Jed fighting the monsters, and she’ll just be hiding behind the bushes, watching them get injured because of fighting. She doesn’t even know why they bothered to fight these monsters because there was a shield on the school. They were total idiots. Though, if something goes wrong, Clarence has her weapon ready.
