~Chapter 27~

Clarence

Clarence stood in front of the full-length mirror, staring at her reflection in shock. She gulped as she read the message on the mirror written on a piece of pink paper over and over again:

I hope you like my birthday present, darling.

~A

Never in a million years would she dress up like this. That goddess’s gift for her was just ridiculous. And when Artemis and the hunters left a week ago, why hadn’t her mother mentioned that her birthday was near? She messed up her chocolate brown hair, but it instantly returned to its original form after she woke up. She rubbed her face to take out the makeup, but it would reappear.

When Clarence woke up, she headed straight to the mirror to fix up a little but much to her surprise, she was wearing a sleeveless blue dress that had a brown belt around her waist, matching dark flats, she wore a bright red lipstick, blush, mascara and eyeliner. And lastly, her brown hair was fully curled. She scowled at the mirror. This was the grand birthday present Aphrodite got her.

She flopped back to her bed in defeat. Her look wouldn’t probably change until the end of the day. She decided just to skip a day today. Her look was embarrassing, plus it’ll be hard to move in the tight dress which practically suffocated her. She’d just lock herself in her room until she could change herself. This whole birthday thing just made her hate the goddess of love more. What was she thinking when she turned her into this?

Clarence silently cursed in Greek. Her mom has to send her some kind of gift. That’ll make her day. For the meantime, she would just stay in her room and ignore her friends. Yeah, and they’ll figure that something is up, she thought.

“Clarence,” a voice whispered from outside the cabin. Clarence hid; making sure nobody would see her from the window.

“Clarence, it’s us. We know it’s your birthday and what Aphrodite did to you.” The voice said again.

Clarence immediately looked out from the window. Standing there, were Halliope and Gus, staring back at her.

“I bet you guys predicted this, huh?” The oracle and augur nodded. “Alright, guys, there is no way I’m going outside so don’t convince me.”

“We’re just here to see how you’re doing,” Halliope said, “Happy Birthday, by the way.”

Clarence rolled her eyes, “It’s not a happy day, clearly.” For the past sixteen years, she didn’t know her birthdate so she never celebrated one. Now, that she knew her birthday is on August eighteenth, she kinda wished she didn’t have a birthday.

“We don’t have any presents for you, so is there anything we can do?” Gus asked.

“Actually, there is,” Clarence answered, “Can you guys fetch me a cup of coffee and any food from the dining hall? I’m starving.” Halliope and Gus nodded before heading towards the dining hall.

Not long after that, Jed’s voice rang from behind her door, “Clarence, are you up yet? Ash and I have to go.” Clarence mentally thanked herself for locking the door earlier.

“Just go ahead, Jed. I have…some things to do.” She said.

“Are you alright?”

“I’m fine, now go.”

She heard some footsteps then the cabin was completely quiet. She sighed in relief. She was all alone now, in her room, with nobody to disturb her.
