~Chapter 34~

The snow crushed beneath my feet as I walked through the narrow path of the forest. I couldn’t sleep a while ago so I just decided to take a short walk in the woods. There was no nice stargazing spot anywhere so I was better off with a stroll, plus, my mom advised me not to use my powers that much because it might take away much of my energy. So here I am, clutching my jacket tighter around me and the winter breeze swept through the entire forest. The moon and stars were blocked by the tall trees: definitely not the best scenery for me. Maybe I shouldn’t have gone off late at night at all.

I stopped and leaned my back against a tree because I shouldn’t be too far away from the campsite. I squeezed my eyes shut, savoring this moment in the cold December night. I missed being in Ash’s arms, just him and me, staring up at the stars. I missed the times when Ami and I would just talk and hang out. Heck, I even missed my idiot of a cousin. Tomorrow….tomorrow they might all come back to me. How could I possibly face that? It’s not like I would come up to them and say ‘Hey guys, I just came back from the Underworld and then I joined the hunters. How cool is that?’

Nope, it’s not that easy.

So I should start from the beginning, yeah?

Yes, I became a hunter. It’s been six months since I joined them. I know, six months is a pretty long time. I spent almost a month recovering from the Underworld experience – walking in crutches is not fun at all. Anyway, I did heal and soon joined in the hunting. I had my trusty bow and arrows always clasped around my wrist and I was always alert. Sami even offered me the position of the leader however, I declined. Sami’s a great leader and she deserves that position. I just acted like one of them, as if I wasn’t the unique daughter of Artemis.

And this was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

Just a month ago, Artemis left us for some stuff she needs to do. See, it’s the Winter Solstice tomorrow and Olympus throws this humongous party for it. The whole camp, all the gods and other people attend the Winter Solstice party – even us hunters. Tomorrow, we’re heading for the Empire State building and now, we’re currently in Philadelphia so it’ll take us until dusk to get there. Honestly, I was a little nervous going there…

“The winter…” I murmured to myself. Oh, all the possibilities that could happen just one day away.

“Oh, yes, the winter,” an unfamiliar voice said. My eyes opened and I looked around, hoping to find the owner of the voice. I shifted my feet nervously. Usually when I was alone in a forest, it doesn’t really end well.

“Hello, is anyone there?” I asked, louder this time.

“No there’s not,” the voice said, with a tone of sarcasm.

“Who’s there?” I was still looking around.

“Oh, just no one important,” the voice answered. It sounded really annoyed.

“Would you care to show yourself?” I questioned, rolling my eyes.

“I don’t think that’ll be necessary, darling.”

“Should I be afraid?”

“That,” it said, “is up to you.”

“Who the heck are you?” I’ve never heard this voice ever in my life. But by the way it sounded, I don’t think it’s dangerous or anything.

“Take a guess, darling.”

Gods, this guy is so annoying. I racked my brain for some monster that’s invisible and has an annoying voice…nope, nothing like that.
