*Shawn’s POV*

I looked down at the counter in front of me, proud of the dinner I had made. It wasn’t anything too fancy, but I knew Anisah would love it.

I had been planning out the perfect date for weeks and I had finally told Anisah about it a couple days before. We hadn’t had a date for a pretty long time, so I had tried to give her as little hints as I could. I wanted it to be somewhat of a surprise.

After quickly setting the table, with a red tablecloth and everything, I headed to our room to get changed into something a little fancier. Once I
had changed into a button down shirt and black pants, I walked into the bathroom. Looking in the mirror, I
fixed my hair a bit and smiled. She would absolutely love it and I was so excited.

The sun was only just starting to set as I went back into the kitchen and waited for my beautiful girl to come home.

However, I was still sitting in that same spot when it became fully dark outside.

And Anisah hadn’t shown up yet. She should have been home from work over an hour ago.

It hurt me a little knowing that maybe she hadn’t been looking forward to our date as much as I had. The food I had worked so hard on was growing cold.

I leaned back in the chair and sighed, “I guess we’re not having a date.”

*Anisah’s POV*

My coworker walked up to me. “Hey, why are you still working?” she asked.

“I took a later shift,” I told her. “Oh,” she said, “I thought you said something about having a date with Shawn tonight.”

Oh no.

“Oh my god,” I gasped, “I totally forgot to tell him I’m working late. Oh, he is going to be so mad at me.”

“Hey, it’s okay,” she spoke, “I take over for you so you.”

“You’re the best,” I thanked her before grabbing my purse and hurrying out the door.

This wasn’t good. Shawn was so happy every time he talked about what tonight would be like. He was almost giddy. I didn’t want to let him down, but I was over an hour late.

Climbing into my car, I drove home as quickly as I could.

When I got to the front door, I hesitated a second from opening it. But, soon I took a deep breath and opened the door.

“Are you kidding me?” Shawn shouted as soon as I walked in and closed the door behind me. He was standing in front of me looking pretty upset.

I knew I had really messed up so I didn’t try to argue with him. “Shawn, I’m so sorry,” I tried, “I had to work late and I forgot to tell you. I promise if I had remembered I would have been here perfectly on time.”

“No Anisah,” he shook his head, “I’m not going to just accept your apology that easily. This was supposed to be our night. Our night to be together. But I guess that doesn’t mean anything to you.”

I tried reaching out my arm to stop him, but he turned before I could. Shawn walked away from me and I heard him go out through the door leading to the backyard.

I sighed and walked quickly after him, but stopped when I saw the kitchen and dining room. My eyes stared at the perfectly set table. On it the candles that were still not lit and the plates that were still empty. And then I saw the dishes in the sink.

He really had worked hard for me and I immediately felt terrible.

I was about to step outside after him, but I knew it wouldn’t be enough just to apologize to him again. I knew I really hurt him.

Setting down my keys, I walked around the house gathering a couple blankets and pillows. The back door squeaked a little as I opened it and I saw Shawn standing with his back to me.

“Hey,” I said quietly as I walked up beside him.

“Hey.” He was looking up at the sky but moved his eyes to look down at his hands.

I sighed, “Shawn, I know it doesn’t make a difference now, but I’m sorry. I’m sorry and I promise that I wouldn’t bail on you on purpose. It means so much to me that you worked so hard and that you care so much about me. You treat me so well and I’m sorry that I haven’t done the same recently.”

“It’s okay,” Shawn spoke up, “We all make mistakes. I wasn’t really that mad at you, I was just disappointed that tonight wasn’t going to go how I planned it. I wanted it to be a perfect night for you.”

“You know, it’s not impossible for it to still be that way,” I hinted.

Shawn turned to me and looked at the blankets in my arms. “What’s all this?” he asked.

“Well,” I started, stepping down to the grass of the yard, “I thought it might be fun to lay out here and look at the stars together. I know it’s late, but it would just be for a little while.”

Shawn grinned, “That sounds like a great idea.”

With the help of Shawn, I spread out the blankets on the grass and placed the pillows on top. When we lied down on them, it was actually more comfortable than I expected it to be. And the night was perfect: clear skies with stars poking through the darkness all over.

Shawn wrapped his arm around me and pulled me closer to him. “I love you,” he smiled, “I would have never thought of such a perfect idea. You’re so good at this.”

“Thank you babe,” I said, kissing his lips, “And I love you too.” I stared up at the sky, admiring all of the bright stars. Then I glanced over at Shawn to see him staring at me instead.

“What?” I asked, giggling a little.

He leaned in and kissed my nose, “You’re beautiful, especially right now in the moonlight.”

A smile formed on my lips and I pressed my head against his chest.
