*Y/n's POV*

Only a few days after October fifteenth, I knew one thing: it was that time of year again.

My favorite holiday, Halloween, was getting closer and closer, which was enough excitement by itself. However, October meant more than just that. It also meant that my boyfriend, Shawn, would start scaring me.

Neither of us meant any harm by scaring each other. It was just a playful thing we did every year to unofficially celebrate Halloween. We had done it each October since the year we met and I really enjoyed it, even though I got scared much easier than Shawn did.

One day when I came home from work, I opened our front door and immediately knew that Shawn must have been planning something. The house was too quiet and almost all the lights were off. Sure, there was sunlight coming in through the windows, but I still felt on edge as I set down my purse and locked the door.

“Shawn?” I hesitantly called. When there was no response, I walked slowly toward the living room. I carefully peeked around the corner. The room was empty, but that meant that Shawn was still waiting for me somewhere else.

Walking over to the couch, I picked up a pillow to protect myself. “Shawn, I have a pillow,” I said, holding it up on my shoulder, “I will throw it at you if you try to scare me.” There was once again no answer.

Still clutching onto the pillow, I cautiously walked over to the stairs. Near the first step was the door to a closet. “Gotcha!” I shouted as I opened the door, expecting Shawn to be inside.

However, there was nothing but coats, a mop, and other random stuff inside. “Hm,” I breathed as I shut the closet door.

Then I turned and walked up the stairs. I felt like I had to be even more careful upstairs since there were more doors and rooms and less open space.

The door to Shawn and I's bedroom wasn't how it normally was. It wasn't open all the way, it was mostly shut which was unusual. Shawn must be behind there, I thought. Feeling completely confident in myself, I stepped forward towards the door. I quickly pushed it open  and tossed the pillow gently on the other side of it. But once again, Shawn wasn't there and the pillow hit the carpet with a thump.

“Huh,” I spoke to myself, picking up the pillow, “Maybe he's not going to scare me.”

Suddenly, though, Shawn jumped out from around the corner that lead to our bathroom and shouted “boo!” I yelped and dropped the pillow.

“Shawn!” I scolded and placed my hand on my chest. He just grinned and hugged me. “How are you so good at this?” I questioned, “I'm going to accidentally hit you sometime if you keep jumping out from nowhere.”

Shawn squeezed me, swaying side to side. “I'm sorry, babe,” he said, “I couldn't resist. Your reaction is kind of adorable.”

“Well, it's not adorable to me,” I pouted.

Shawn just chuckled and pulled me in closer. I was still pretending to be upset at him until he pressed his lips onto mine. I gave in and kissed him back. I could feel him grin against my lips..

When he pulled away, he spoke, “I guess I should be prepared for payback.”

“You should,” I replied.

“Or I could start planning my next idea,” Shawn said with a smirk.

I stuck my tongue out at him. “I hate you.”

“You love me.”

“Okay, you're right,” I nuzzled my head against his chest, “I love you.”
