*Present Day*
I woke up to my alarm beeping and I checked to see it had been going off for a few minutes already. I quickly slipped (literally) into the shower and got out. I threw my hair into a messy bun and threw on my jean shorts and a random shirt I pulled out of my closet and grabbed my suitcase. I made sure everything was off twice (stupid OCD) and locked my door. I got in my car and drove to the airport which was a few miles away from my house. It wasn't that big but it was an airport.
I was caught at a red light so I opened up my phone and texted Lori. "Hey, I got a flight for 7 o'clock. I will be at the Atlanta International Airport by about 9 but have Shane or whoever there by 8:45 just in case." I clicked send and the light turned green. I put my phone down and started driving. I arrived at the airport at about 6:30 and I was at the terminal entrance by 6:50.
I sat down on the chair waiting for my flight to get called when I watched I watched a couple start arguing near the window. I watched them out of the corner of my eye and they were really going at it. I watched for so long that I almost missed my flight. "Last call for flight 25 to Altanta, Georgia." The lady said and I shot up and gave her my ticket. I shuffled through the plane and found my seat next to the window. I kept my bag on me because I didn't really like the idea of bothering people who sat next to me to get it. I turned my phone off and waited for the flight to start.

The woman next to me patted my shoulder slightly and I opened my eyes. I looked over at her and she smiled. "I'm sorry to wake you but I just wanted to let you know that the flight is landing." She said and I smiled and thanked her. The flight landed and I quickly turned my phone on. I checked to see if there were any messages and there were two. One from Lori and one from Shane. I opened Lori's first. "Okay, I'll tell Shane. Have a safe flight!" She said and I smiled. I opened Shane's text after. "Hey Nattie, I'm here. I'm right outside the terminal gates waiting." He said and I looked at when it was sent. 8:43. I snickered slightly and got all of my stuff and started walking off the plane.
I looked carefully for Shane and I spotted him but he hasn't seen me yet. I came into a small clearing and I could tell he saw me. "Well, lookie who we have here. All these losers get picked up by random people but I get picked up by the sheriff deputy." I said smiling and I heard him chuckle. I walked over and jumped up slightly, wrapping my arms around his neck. I moved my head slightly so my mouth was near his ear. "How is he?" I asked lightly and he pulled me back slightly. "He's alive." he said and I nodded slightly. We went to baggage claim and we were soon in the car.
We drove for a little while to get back to King County and we finally arrived at the hospital. We parked the car and started walking towards the entrance. We waited in the elevator for what seemed like hours when it finally dinged and let us off. Shane sped in front of me and I followed quickly. Shane stopped at a door and I knew my brother was in there.
Shane walked in slowly and I saw my brother. He was all hooked up to machines and his eyes were open but they were just staring into space. You could be three inches from his face and he still wouldn't really be looking at you. My breathe caught in my throat and Lori and Carl both looked over. Lori got up from her position on the bed and walked around and grabbed me into her arms. I hugged tightly as my eyes filled with tears. I opened them to see Carl was sitting in his chair watching us and then glancing down at his feet.
I released Lori and walked around the bed and put my hands on Carls knees. I put my hand under his chin and looked into his eyes. They were glassy and I knew he was holding all his emotions in. I smiled sadly and pulled him into a hug. I felt a few drops on my shoulder and I knew he had started crying. I pulled back and looked over to Lori. "Can I take him outside for a minute?" I asked and she nodded.
I held my hand out and Carl took it immediately. We walked out into the hallway and as soon as Lori and Shane were out of sight Carl collided with my middle and started crying. I leaned down and hugged him tight. "I know bud. It's gonna be hard. It's hard on all of us but look at me." I said as I pulled Carl back. His eyes were still watering and I wiped a tear away. "Comas are only temporary." I said and he looked up slightly confused. I forgot he was only twelve. "It means that it doesn't last forever." I said and he nodded. "That means that your dad will be right back to normal when he wakes up. Everything will be the same as it was before." I said smiling and Carls lips lifted slightly. "Aaahh there's that Grimes smile I've missed so much. Come here bud." I said and I pulled him into another hug.
He let go soon after and I stood back up. I led him back into the room with his mother and she cuddled him in his arms. "Um, do you think I could have a minute alone with him?" I asked as I glanced over at Rick. Lori nodded and Shane started to walk by but he put his hand on my shoulder. When they were gone I took a deep breathe and moved over towards my brother.
I sat down on the bed and grasped his hand. I held it to my heart as I looked at his eyes. "Hey big brother. Um, I know your in there and can hear me so I'm just gonna tell you something. I'm gonna stay here as long as I possibly can with you, Lori, Carl, and Shane. I don't necessarily know how long that will be but I'll be here. I want you to know that I'm sorry I haven't been around lately. I've just been so busy at work and I...." I said but I started to cry. I put my head on his chest and listened to the heart beat like I did when we were younger and I would have a problem and he would comfort me. I took another deep breathe and looked him in the eye.
"I love you Icky."
