In 2010 at the age of 18 I was recruited by the FBI as a secret special agent tasked with the investigations and assignments the FBI couldn't be associated with. Over the years I remained in the shadows until I was tasked with secretly guarding Jona...
KAITLYN STONE I sat at my desk roughly a week after Lily's death after dropping Conrad off at the hospital for his first day back after his injury. "Stone." I answered absently when my phone rang. "Kaitlyn, Nic just got fired. Lily's autopsy came back that she died of a potassium overdose and Bell said that Nic's liable." Conrad said frantically. "Okay, Conrad. I'll be right there." I answered gently. I pulled up in front of the hospital and met Conrad and Nic outside. She reached over and hugged me. "Thank you for coming. I know we don't know each other very well but..." I raised my hand to stop her. "If Conrad trusts you then so do I. I've always trusted his judgment." I answered. "What can you tell me about the night Lily died?" "It was an unremarkable night. Dr. Hunter asked me to hang a bag of potassium as part of her treatment before I went home. When I left I asked Conrad to look after her and she was fine." She answered. "It was roughly a half hour after Nic left that Lily coded." Conrad added. "How long would it take for a potassium overdose to cause her to code?" I asked. "Fifteen... twenty minutes tops." He answered. "Let me do some research. Go home, Nic. Call me directly if you need anything. It'll be easier for me to get away than Conrad." I sighed as Conrad wrapped his arm around me. "Thank you." He whispered kissing my temple. "Of course. Even if she wasn't your best friend I'd still want the right person to go to be held liable for Lily's death." I answered looking up at him. "You go back to work and I'll call you when I find something." He leaned down to kiss me and released me before turning to hug Nic and walking into the hospital. "Why is this happening?" She asked me after he disappeared into the hospital. "I'm not sure. Try to lay low and let me do my job." I insisted touching her shoulder. "Conrad says there's no one better than you." She sighed. "I'm too humble to agree but he tells me that all the time too. However, I throw it back at him whenever he starts to worry about me." I smiled at her. "Go home, Nic. I'll figure this out." She nodded and walked off to her car. I sighed again looking up at the hospital to find Dr. Lane Hunter watching me from her office window. I smiled and waved at her. I lied a little when I told Nic I was humble. I was actually rather arrogant when it came to my work. I didn't like to brag around my friends and I was pretty down to earth outside of work but I also was well aware of my skills and liked my suspects to know that I would find the truth. Call it confidence. Call it arrogance. Call it whatever you want but I was the best at what I did. Period. I sat back down at my desk in my office and called to obtain Lily Kendall's autopsy report and then called to request the police investigation file. Both were provided to me without hesitation. Looking over the file it was clear not much real investigation was being done. No one interviewed Conrad or Nic or anyone else. They took the autopsy report and the log listing who hung the bag of potassium as the only evidence they needed. An experienced attorney would rip the case apart which seemingly led them to just stop investigating. I shook my head and buried my face in my hands. This kind of spotty police work gave us all a bad name. "Stone." I answered my ringing phone. "Kaitlyn. I did what you said and went home but there was a man on my front porch. He used my full name, Kaitlyn." Nic told me. "Where are you now? Did you make it in the house?" I asked. "When I got home and he spoke to me he walked off and I went inside and locked all my doors and windows." She sighed frustrated. "Okay. Stay there. I'm on my way. I'm going to call Conrad. Just try to stay calm and I'll be there soon." "Yeah, okay." She sighed. I hung up and called my boyfriend. "Kaitlyn?" He answered on the first ring. "I'm on my way to Nic's. She called and said someone was on her front porch when she got home. Do not panic. I'm going there now and we'll both be fine but when you get off meet us there?" I asked. "Of course. I want to be where you are." He said. I arrived at Nic's fifteen minutes later and she let me in. By the time Conrad arrived I'd completed a sketch of the man Nic saw on her porch and showed it to him.

"I don't recognize him." He said sitting down next to me. "I do." I sighed. "You're not going to like it." "Who is it?" He asked. "His name is Adrian Cochran. He's an assassin from London." I answered. "He didn't sound English." Nic sighed. "Part of being an assassin is knowing how to manipulate your voice or your appearance to confuse your mark." I answered slipping into my English accent. "It's second nature." "You speak like someone who knows?" She looked at me causing me to look at Conrad. "You didn't tell her?" I asked. "I didn't think it was my place to tell her." He answered. "You could have at least told me you didn't tell her." I sighed. "I'm sorry, love." He cuddled closer to me. "Didn't tell me what?" She asked. "After Chase died my stepfather, Scott Walker recruited me as an assassin for the American government. Along with serving in the Marines and later joining the FBI I worked covertly as an assassin." I answered gently gauging her reaction. She just stared blankly at me for what felt like hours. "So, you killed people for a living?" She asked dubiously. "It was good money but that's not why I did it." I answered. "Then why?" She asked. "My mother was an assassin my whole life. My father was one of her marks. Over her career she killed at least five hundred people. One of them was Martin Blair, father of Drake Blair. Drake Blair was a Russian spy. When I got married to Chase Stone when I was eighteen he decided to get his revenge on our family by abducting my husband and torturing him before sending me his various body parts in the mail. After Chase's death I decided that the more terrorists and spies I could kill the better I'd feel. It didn't work but I was helping protect others from being victims so I stuck with it for a long while. The last time I killed a man was well over a year ago now. I could do it if I needed to but I just haven't come across anyone deserving." I explained. "So, this guy was sent to kill me? Why?" She asked not looking utterly appalled at my confession. "I don't think so. Assassin's usually like to just get in and out. We're not about a long game of intimidation and fear. I think he was sent to scare you and I doubt he'll be back. If he does come back he'll have to face me and no one wants to do that." I answered earning me a laugh from my lover. "Who..." Nic was cut off by a loud knock at the door. The three of us looked at one another before I stood up to answer the door. "Director Kaitlyn Stone?" A uniformed officer greeted me questioningly. "How can I help you officer?" I countered. "We have an arrest warrant for Nicolette Nevin for the criminally negligent manslaughter of Lily Kendall." He answered.
