in which an aspiring athlete meets an actual athlete
all similarities to other stories are probably coincidental.
thanks.

yeonjun stared at the clock nervously.
ten more minutes, and the bell would go to signal the end of their school day. this prospect usually put yeonjun in a very good mood, but he was dreading having to swallow his pride and take part in the programme like minyoung had asked.
"that's it class. remember to annotate your texts before the next lesson!" the teacher left.
"i'll be at the tennis courts in ten," she went up to him casually once the bell went, "you can decide whether you want to come or not."
without waiting for a reply, she took her bag, tucked her racket under her arm and left.
"ugh!" yeonjun simply groaned, not wanting to have to face her after abandoning her that night.
"it's actually not that bad y'know," soobin spoke up, "being partnered up with her would definitely be better than joohyun. did you know? i watched her attempt to teach tennis yesterday, and she nearly bit the poor girl's head off."
seeing that yeonjun was still prideful, despite already having brought his own tennis racket, soobin smirked.
"if you really want to train later, i'll stay back with you."
muttering a quick word of thanks and shrugging his shoulders, yeonjun made his way to the tennis courts. as he passed by the track, he resisted the urge to drop everything and sprint away. he controlled himself and opened the gates to the courts.
she was already there, warming up at the backboard.
"you came!" she said with an air of surprise.
he couldn't decide if he was feeling ashamed for participating in the programme after all the rage, or if he was embarrassed to face her because he had put her out of training for slightly over a week.
he chose to say nothing.
"thank you," she said again, "for actually turning up."
"huh?" he looked up with an air of surprise, "i-i enjoy tennis too."
her smile seemed to get impossibly bigger at his statement, and yeonjun took a micro step backwards as she came closer. despite the smile on her face, her eyes glinted with competitiveness and he could not help but stare.
"care for a match then?" she was baiting him.
"i'm pretty decent, just so you know." he took her bait.
with the air of a fisherman having reeled in his biggest catch yet, she grabbed her racket and made her way to the side of the courts. they flipped a coin and she won, and chose to serve first. her gaze had changed, and the mischief that was dancing in her eyes previously had vanished.
yeonjun regarded her with amusement and subtle admiration.
he gripped his racket tightly, eyes fixed on the neon ball that was now being thrown into the air.
