Taylor

“Hey, what do you think of this dress?” Karlie asked from behind me. We were out shopping in a little boutique on Houston Street. She had flown back from St. Louis yesterday, and we made plans for today earlier this week. Although things were slightly awkward between us when we met up this morning, she had begun to warm up to being around me again, and I was grateful for that.

“It’s cute, you should try it on!” I urged. The dress that Karlie held in her hand was nothing more than a simple little black dress, but I knew it would look perfect on her—everything always did.

“If you say so,” She mumbled as she walked to the back of the store. I followed behind her and took a seat on the bench beside the change rooms. One of the employees came over to unlock the cubicle, and Karlie shot me a puzzled look.

“What?” I asked, turning my head to the side.

“I’m going to need someone to zip me up…” Her voice trailed off and she nodded her head in the direction of the change room. I swallowed hard. I missed seeing her gorgeous body, but I didn’t want to intrude on her privacy.

“I’ll go ask one of the employees.” I stammered, standing up from the bench.

“Oh my God, Taylor,” Karlie groaned. “It’s just my zipper. Besides, you’ve seen me with less on before.” Karlie rolled her eyes and I couldn’t help but laugh.

“Hey, I’m just trying to give you what you wanted.” I replied, walking into the cubicle with her. She closed the door behind me, and we were now standing alone together.

“What would that be?” She questioned as she slipped off her t-shirt. I tried to look anywhere else but on her, but I couldn’t help it. Her back was turned to me, so it made it easier to rake my eyes down her slender frame when she peeled her jeans off too.

“Well, you told me that you wanted to ease into things.” I reminded her.

“And that’s what we’re doing, Taylor.” She answered smartly. She finished pulling the dress on and inched closer to me.

“Oh, and can you do this up, please?” She added, sweeping her hair to one side. I lowered my hands until they found the small metal zipper and I began to pull it up.

“I know, but I’m just a little bit confused,” I breathed. Karlie spun around to face the mirror, and started looking at how the dress fit. It clung to her beautifully, as if someone had made it specifically for her. “That’s really cute, by the way.” I quipped.

“What’s there to be confused about?” She asked, ignoring my compliment.

“I don’t know how to act around you, Karlie,” I confessed. “The line between ‘friends’ and having a relationship with you is so blurred for me. I don’t know what’s too much, I guess.” I spoke slowly and twisted my face, bracing myself in case she grew annoyed with me.

“Friends help friends when they try clothes on, Taylor. You’re thinking about this way more than you have to. This isn’t too much.” She said as she reached for her purse. “Are you ready to go? I’m just going to buy this and then we can get going.” She pointed to the dress and starting taking it off. I let out a quiet sigh when Karlie wasn’t looking. Why was it so hard for me to do this with her? I wanted her, there was no doubt about that, but being so close to her in the wrong way felt worse than not being with her at all. I felt like a cat whose toy was being dangled right in front of my face, but every time I reached out for it something would pull it further away, just out of my grasp.
