Chapter 28

The sun blinds my eyes. Ugh, I hate sun. I pull the covers over my head. My stomach growls but I ignore it. Why am I so hungry anyway?

My eyes suddenly snap open at the realisation.

Kalia! Sky! Greg! DAN?!

I bolt up and see that I'm in my own bed. What the-

"Mia," a voice beside me says.

I scream but quickly calm down when I see that it is Dan.

"How are you feeling?" He says cautiously reaching out for my hand.

"Hungry," I say, the word leaving my mouth before even processing in my brain.

He laughs and pats my hand.

"What happened?"

"You were exhausted from all that crying." He says worried and climbing into bed with me, "why were you crying?"

I fiddle with the duvet cover nervously. He doesn't know.

He pulls me onto his lap and I rest my head on his shoulder.

"Mia?" He prompts me softly.

"I slapped Kalia," I blurt out.

What's with the word vomit today?

To my surprise Dan laughs.

"You what?" He says laughing.

"I'm serious Dan."

He stops laughing and I squeeze my eyes bracing myself

"What did she do to you Mia?" He asks genuinely curious.

I breathe a sigh of both relief and preparation.

"Um..."

"You can trust me Mia," he says rubbing my back soothingly.

"I know I can," I reply.

"Then what happened?"

I take in a deep breath and tell him everything. From the carnival to the confrontation yesterday.

"That's preposterous Mia. Kalia would never do anything like that. Steal me? She likes Greg!" He says laughing.

My mouth opens in shock and pull away from his grasp. 

"Are you serious Dan?" I ask him.

His eyebrows knit together in confusion.

"What?"

"You don't believe me?" I demand.

"Mia, I've met her." He says calmly.

"Dan, I know her." I snap back at him.

"You're being ridiculous. We're talking about the girl Greg likes. He's not that stupid." He says slightly offended.

"Well, looks like he really is." I yell.

Dan stops, digesting the words I just said.

"Mia. Greg is my best friend." He says, angry.

"You think I don't know that?!" I yell more aggressively.

He stops and takes a deep breath, clearly trying to calm himself.

How could my own boyfriend not believe me?!

"I think we need a break," he says finally, climbing off the bed.

"What?" I gasp, all the anger leaving me.

He turns his back towards me and starts to leave the room.

"Don't leave me," I choke, "Dan, I'm sorry..."

He hesitates before turning around.

"We need some time to figure things out." He says, apology and pain evident on his face.

He turns back around to leave.

"Wait," I manage, "did you just break up with me?" 

"No," he says softly, "we just need a break."

I nod with defeat and look down at my hands covered in tears. 

When I look back up, he was gone.
