"Oh, my Lord!" A loud gasp stirs me awake. "Good Heavens! What is this?"

It is a high-pitched, female voice, sounding utterly shocked and all but happy.

I am not sure where I am and why there is a displeased woman near my bed. I am not even sure if this is my bed at all. It seems safest to pretend to be asleep under the circumstances. I lift my eyelids very slowly and carefully, just a millimeter, to assess the situation through the narrow slit hidden behind my lashes.

A sweet looking lady in her sixties is standing next to me, energetically crossing herself and gazing at my face with such pity, as if I were not asleep, but already dead.

"Sweet Jesus! Forgive me that I still work for that beast," she keeps muttering. "Save his soul as he is trapped in sin, but is still young and can change."

She sighs heavily and shakes her head in total disbelief upon saying the last words, obviously convinced that the said change for better can never happen.

I myself also pray that I somehow remember where I am, what has happened to me, and why this woman looks so familiar. I would also really appreciate it if she goes away so I can stop pretending and look around. She bends closer to study my face better instead, and starts tsking.

"Poor boy! Must have been through a lot to faint here. Only God knows what that devil did to him." The lady's expression is an odd mixture of disapproval and sympathy. She finally walks away, mumbling under her breath. "And what is this outrageous profession he has chosen? To make people drink alcohol, after five years studying to become an engineer, as if it weren't enough that he painted himself like a demon. I would spank some brain into his head if I were his mother. That is what being permissive does. Strict discipline, I said, but Nicol never listened to me. There was no one to lead the lost soul into the right path."

I almost snort. The description instantly refreshes my memories. I passed out on Sam's sofa. However, I still have no idea if it was today or yesterday and how long I slept. Now I clearly recall that this is the woman we saw taking a taxi. She does not seem to be his mother after all, but she would definitely like to take her place for a while. Strangely enough, I am not too worried about the situation I have found myself in. I am much more concerned with how to stifle a bubbling laugh at the image of that petite lady spanking Sam. If it depended on her, he would be at church right now, begging for forgiveness for his many sins.

"Hey, Rose!" Sam's sleepy voice interrupts my thoughts. "Aren't you a bit early today? It's still only eight."

"Good morning, honey," she chirps sweetly, plastering a juicy kiss on his cheek and lovingly rubs his back. "I am traveling to the countryside later. I promised your mommy that I would never let you start the day without a good breakfast no matter what. And here I am."

I am stunned. What happened to the deep indignation at his imprudent lifestyle?

"Shall I make it for two? Is the little angel staying?" she coos, leaving me openmouthed.

"Yes, sure," Sam answers. "Can you make some muffins, please? I love the chocolate chips ones, with the cherry jam in the center."

"Aww, of course, sweetheart. They have been your favorite since you were five." She giggles and pinches his cheek as if he is still a toddler.

My self-control flies out of the window at the sight. I laugh out loudly, startling them both.

"Cherry jam, huh?" I snort, biting my lip to stop the cackle that threatens to burst out like a bomb.

"Oh, good morning, dear! I am Auntie Rose." She beams at me, without crossing herself and tsking this time. "So nice to meet you! Did you sleep well? You must have gotten stiff on that uncomfortable sofa. Sammy, how could you let the boy sleep there? Where are your manners? Good thing you at least gave him a blanket."

If I were the Academy, I would grant her the Oscar in a twinkling.

"I wasn't sure if he wanted me to move him," Sam explains, attracting my attention. "Sometimes, he says he would like something, and then acts like he'd rather not do it."

One glimpse, and I am ready to black out again. He is leaning on the kitchen island, wearing nothing but a pair of boxers and a sleeveless, white top, which barely covers his abs. His hair is a total mess, sticking out in all directions, and it looks damn good. His green eyes are sparkling mischievously, fixed on my flushed face. His wide grin makes my heart drop directly in my stomach. I freeze like a rabbit in the headlights as he starts walking towards me. This man is bad for my health. Literally.

"Aren't you going to tell Auntie your name?" Sam asks, offering a hand to help me up.

"Um, sorry... I'm Alec," I choke out, struggling to produce something at least somewhat resembling a polite smile.

"What a lovely name," she exclaims, full of benevolence. "What would you like to have for breakfast, dear?"

There is no way that I am answering this or any other question. Sam is holding my hand and pulling me towards him. I am so dumbfounded that my legs tangle into the blanket. There is nothing I can hold on to, so I just slam on his chest with my face buried in the crook of his neck. Oh, my! What is this cologne. It smells divine.

"Do you like muffins?" he purrs in my ear.

That is the end of me. A tiny moan escapes my lips before I can stop it. It is barely audible but sounds to me loud enough to wake the dead. I am totally mortified.

"Hmm, I think this means yes." Sam chuckles, dragging me towards the kitchen, with an arm wrapped around my waist.
