Mae's pov
It had been a couple months since I moved in with Rafe and things were going great.
We'd gotten quite used to waking up in the morning and moving around each other. It was peaceful, however explaining the situation to his parents was not peaceful. His father, Ward, was a bit quiet on the whole matter but didn't protest. His step-mother on the other hand or 'My Dad's Wife' as Rafe calls her was frustrated with the rush. Rafe had to explain that I would stay in his room, use his bathroom, use the kitchen when he is there and the lounge on the occasional opportunity.
I was very much a restricted guest in her eyes- an unwanted guest.
All in all; it was worth it if I got to see him wake up every morning with a lazy smile and his hand brushing the hair out my face. Heavenly.
Anyways, moving on.
Today was Rafe's 18th birthday and I had left the house early in the morning before he had even woken up. I left him a little note explaining that his family wanted to have breakfast alone with him before they left for some meeting in the city. Of course, I also wished him a happy birthday and that I'd see him at school very soon. Before I could do any of that I had to collect his birthday presents from Katelyn's house and stash them in the back of her car.
Let's just say she hates being woken up early for any occasion - even her own birthday.
Once we did finally get to school and Katelyn's mood had been lightened by a good strong cup of coffee, I spent the whole day with him. Not like I couldn't do anything else. I secretly slipped him notes with kind words and that I needed him to get me something from the pharmacy before he comes home - just some headache medication don't think like that!
It's my distraction to get his birthday present's up into his room before he arrives home earlier then expected.. Thankfully his friends has invited him for a round of golf before the party. Rafe would no doubt leave early to come home to get ready, to make sure he looks perfect for his big occasion, not that he ever has any trouble with that. He looks great in almost everything. Just not beige, sorry Raferty.
I snuck him few happy birthday kisses on the cheek when I could and the way he had his hair slightly ruffled today made me want to kiss him properly in the class room. However the thought that I couldn't continue to give him a lovely long birthday kiss right now, stopped me and of course the fact that we were in class. I didn't particularly want to see Principal Thornton today.
I groaned as the last bell rang, Rafe and I went our separate ways and I made my way to my locker where I would be meeting Katelyn. Katelyn had convinced me to get a new dress for his party tonight. I didn't really need a new dress but I had my reasons for going shopping with her. She has been hiding something from me for the last two months, always so skittish and secretive. So I had decided that today was the day I found out why.
I don't go shopping with Katelyn for nothing - she's a bit overbearing. I hope today wouldn't be one of those days.
"So Kate... where should we go first?" I asked closing my locker as she smiled down at her history book? The hell..... Whatever it held had her completely captivated, wide smile just like the first time she got to wear heels after begging her mother for literal years. She pulled her lip back between her teeth, her head tilting to the side happily.
