Mae's pov

I sat crossed legged on Rafe's window seat still in my revealing green top and skirt, still remembering his reaction to when I sat on his bed I thought it was best not too. Rafe poured some of the vodka into small glasses which I would sip on slowly, I hadn't experienced the effects of vodka before so I was already very cautious.

Rafe smiled at me as he made his way over to his window seat. He handed me a glass to which my shaky fingers grasped tightly. Rafe smile grew a little bigger sensing my discomfort and awkwardness to hold the glass.

"For me it tastes like sharpie, it also stings a little as it goes down your throat." he said inspecting the liquid in his glass. I starred skeptically down at the dress and brought it up to my face. I could already smell the bitter and harsh odor which made my nose scrunch in dislike.

I sighed deeply before bringing the glass to my lips, hesitating before tilting the glass up further. It did indeed taste like sharpie as it entered my mouth before I decided to hurry up and swallow it. I coughed as it sent a burning sensation down my throat. Rafe leaned forward and dragged his hand down my arm as a way of saying 'good job' whilst I coughed.

I stopped coughing, placing the glass down and bringing a hand to my chest as the retched taste lingered in my mouth. I watched as Rafe tilted his glass back and seemed to swallow the alcohol with ease.

"That is foul" I stated with a displeasing look on my face. Rafe placed his own glass down a smirk on his lips as he does so.

"Foul, maybe. But if you drink enough of it you forget a lot" he said with a sigh as I just glanced across at my glass.

"I think I'd rather remember the joke then drink liquid sharpie" I said and clasped my hands in my lap with a light smile. Rafe smirked back at me before placing his own glass down beside mine with a questioning look in his eye.

"What?" I blurted out confused at why he was looking at me so questioningly.

"If you weren't going doing anything rash then why did you get changed into that..." he said a little breathless on the that as he raked his eyes over me once more. I bit my lip and looked away for a moment a small giggle threatened to leave my lips.

"I just wanted to see your reaction" I whispered shyly into the space between us before I glanced away with a blush spreading across my face.

"Oh...." he said with a chuckle echoing off of his lips as I moved my eyes back to him. I started to giggle as the blush on my face reddened.

"Mhmm..." I muttered with a grin on my face as my eyes flickered to his nearly made bed

"Rafe?" I hummed quietly still starring at his bed. The questioning thought of why he was so defensive when it came to others sitting on it running through my head.

I could see Rafe attention move from me to the object I started at. I sensed his shoulder slouch as a sigh left his lips, a little ragged.

"Yeah?" He breathed not shutting himself off to whatever my question may be. Although the way he breathed 'yeah' was faint and weak showed me he was still hesitant.

"W-Why do you not let other sit on your bed?" I asked now hesitant myself but my curiosity was growing. Rafe leaned back in his seat his jaw tightening as he shifted his gaze away from me and the bed.

"Is it because you don't want it to be messed up?" I jokingly asked as I watched Rafe duck his head with a grin. He tilted his head back towards me thoughtfully as I started to see his eyes glisten with the sign of a few tears.

"Rafe.. you don't have to tell me" I whispered and extended my hand out to rest o his knee. He smiled thankfully at me before scrunching his nose and continuing.

"Mae...I want to tell you" he said and placed his hand on top of mine. I waited whilst he thought over the words in his head.

"As you most likely know Rose isn't my biological mother. My mother died when we were all quite young" he started as I nodded and grazed my thumb back and forth.

"She used to read me stories every night before bed. She'd sit right beside me and place the book in my lap so I could stare at the pictures, eventually I could read the words as well" he said with a small chuckle as a smile spread across my lips.

"I just feel like that spot on the bed is for her. That she still sits there now and then looking over me." I smiled and stood up to then sit back beside him. I nuzzled my head into the crook of his neck as I moved my hand to intertwine our fingers.

"Thank you for telling me"
