Mae's pov
I sat forward in my chair nervous as to what words would come out of his mouth. Rafe however leaned right back into his chair, not even looking bothered by that fact he was in the Principals office.
Principal Thornton cleared his throat and clasped his hands together on the desk.
"Over the year you two have seemed to cause quite a lot of drama. Giving our teachers, my teachers a lot of stress" he said taking his time, choosing his words carefully.
"Yeah well you try being in a class with this suck up" Rafe pipes up pointing at me completely ignoring the fact we are in here for a serious reason. Also showing what we do in class to Principal Thornton at the same time.
I shifted in my seat to face Rafe my eyebrows raised at his use of 'suck up'.
"Well at least I'm not uptight" I spat back the words slipping out before I could stop myself.
Rafe eyes narrowed into an icy glare, his lips pursing tightly together.Principal Thornton knocked his knuckles against his desk as if they were a gabble silencing voices at court.
"I cannot have this anymore." He said and shook his head at us both. I dropped my gaze to my lap immediately feeling ashamed.
"From now on you two are to work together on everything, sit beside each other in every class. If there is so much as the sign of bickering at anytime you will be marked down by 5 points" he said sternly as he watched us intently.
My eyes widened at his plans and Rafe leaned forward looking rather angry.
"You can't be serious sir. My future will not be jeopardized because you think we need to play happy friends" Rafe stated his jaw clenched tightly.
"Your future!? What about mine! Please, Principal Thornton I need that scholarship, perfect grades, perfect everything. He won't help that!" I said gripping the arms of he chair I was sitting in.
"Kids! You will learn to get along and that is final. Rafe she will not jeopardize you, she might make you better, in fact you do seem tightly wound." Our principal nearly shouted at us silencing us both as we lingered on his every word.
"Mae, I am trusting you to make him loosen up and Rafe I am trusting you to not let her grades slip in the mean time, after all it jeopardizes both of your futures" he said his eyes flicking from myself to Rafe. I turned my head towards Rafe, my blue eyes clouded with uncertainty.
How was I supposed to make him loosen up and get along in the process?
Principal Thornton stood from his chair and made his way over to his door. We both still sat in stunned silence as we thought over what this meant for us both.
I stood up slowly, my legs weak and lips parted softly. Rafe stood up and ran his fingers through his slick hair, his way of showing nerves I guessed.
"Mae, you may leave now" Principal Thornton said calmly as if nothing had happened before opening the door. I hesitated for a moment before walking out the door which quickly shut behind me.
Instead of heading to my physics class I found myself waiting for Rafe. I knew we needed to speak about what we had just been told. I sat down on a bench just outside the office, playing with my fingers as I waited.
A few minutes later the door creaked open and Rafe walked out a pink detention slip in his hand. I abruptly stood up and Rafe eyes held my gaze for a few moment in complete confusion.
"Bummer" I said breaking the silence that echoed between us and gestured to his pink slip.
His eyes darted down to the slip in his hand before hastily shoving it into his back pocket. His eyes darted back up to me looking me up and down as if he was trying to find some secret motive behind my presence.
"What do you want?" He snapped and I ducked my head down starring at my fingers.
"Well, I thought it might be good to talk about what we just got told. I can't afford to have my grades pulled down by one stupid comment off of your lips" I said and flashed my eyes up as the words flowed out of my mouth. He rubbed his chin and rocked on his feet.
"So what I have to play by your rules?" He asked annoyed gesturing his hand out to me. I sighed and lifted my head back up.
"Yes you do. My job is to make you less uptight and to get along with you. Do you know how hard that is when you've tormented me for the last 4 years?" I seethed at him my voice nearly breaking in my last sentence. His lips pursed together and it might've just been my imagination but I saw an apologetic look in his eye. His eyes quickly narrowed as he crossed his arms over his chest in defense. It must've been my imagination.
"Hard for you!? I'm going to be on the end of all of your stupid decisions." He spat back at me.
I bit my lip and smiled angrily at his way of turning things around on others. Gosh he was such a jerk. I scoffed as I turned and paced a few steps away raking my hands back through my hair.
I whipped myself back around and stormed up Rafe my finger pointing right at his face."Just shut up for moment okay" I hissed once more as he drew a sharp breath in at how mad I had become.
"I don't like this just as much as you do, but if we make this work then after this year we don't have to see each other ever again" I stated intently starring up at Rafe. His lips parted for a moment before he pursed them once more deciding that what he was about to say wasn't worth it.
He took a step back from me and I lowered my pointed finger regaining my calm composure.
"Well what do you suggest?" He finally asked deciding it was better to cooperate with me then defy me.
There was so many things I could've said in that moment. But my head was so blank as I was stunned that he asked what I thought we should do. So I relied on the thing I had been doing since I was 7. I relied on what I knew best, what I designed, what I excelled at.
