24.

Mae's pov

My mouth drops open with a breathless gasp as I rapidly shoot him back. No way was I losing to him today.

"I think I've still won" I boasted as he dragged his fingers down through my hair. He chuckled softly whilst shaking his head at me.

"No way. I definitely won" he stated back  as I rolled my eyes at the amount of cofidence he has right now.

"Mm sure Raferty" I playfully taunted and bit my lip as I back away from him. He looked me up and down a small red tinge on his cheeks before he followed me.

I spun around and dashed out the exit to view the scoreboard. The smile I wore moments earlier vanished instantly when I saw the look of horror which my face now reflected on Rafe's friends.

"What do you think you're doing Pogue?" Josh snaps giving me a wicked gear as he crosses him arms across his chest. I opened my mouth to speak but I found myself at lost for words when Rafe spoke up.

"If I remember rightly I did everything so don't attack her" Rafe snapped back at Josh earning a couple of shocked faces from his other friends. I swallowed my mouth suddenly dry and dropped my gaze to the ground.

"Why did you do it then Rafe?" Another snapped as Rafe took a moment before taking a step in towards his 'friends'.

"Because I like her and she's my girlfriend" he said as he stood defensively in front of the group as my head darted up. They all take a moment to look at Rafe and then back at me, absolute disgust written all over their faces.

"Rafe! All these years you have said nothing nice about her and now you say she's girlfriend!" Josh continues as Rafe stays silent and I just look on.

"She's low, dirty, pathetic and a waste of time and space" Josh said as I tried to keep a stern unwavering face as I was insulted. I could see Rafe's jaw tighten as Josh stood there throwing insults at me left, right and centre which Rafe has once said.

"She's not your girlfriend, she's your rival, your worst nightmare, she's a pogue!" Josh screamed back stepping up to Rafe and poking his chest. I saw Rafe purse his lips together a few veins showing on his temple, I watched as his chest harshly rose and fell, he was furious.

"She is my girlfriend, favourite competitor and best dream" Rafe yelled back at Josh now dangerously close to him, eyeing him down and his fingers curled into fists. I gulped and waited for Josh's reaction who looked like he was about to explode, although Rafe wasn't any better.

"If either if you throw a punch I will have to whack both of you upside the head" I suddenly snapped, surprising myself and making their eyes snap towards me. The eyed me up and down, my small frame, short stature but my oh my was I sick of them.

I watched as both of them relaxed their bodies and took a couple weary steps back from each other, unsure whether they were making the right decision. I crossed my arms across my chest and flashed a glare out at all of them.

"Let's go Rafe, you're wasting your time here" I stated bitterly as I outstretched my arm towards him as if I was a mother calling her child. Rafe walked slowly towards me shoving his hands in his pockets. I gave him a light smile as he wrapped his fingers around mine.

I turned and leaned into my side into his as I walked out of the arcade when a small mutter stopped me. 

"Your even let the pogue stick up for you now" I whipped myself around quickly, my hand ripping itself it from Rafe's as I raised it to point at the teenage boys in front of me.

"I am not just a pogue, I am a freaking human being and I was sticking up for myself as all you did was bicker over and about me" I yelled at the boys who started to shrink into themselves. I rubbed my forehead as Rafe grabbed my shoulder and turned me around; taking my frustrated and emotionally exhausted self out of the arcade.

Rafe opened my door for me as I rushed to get into the car and escape the tornado of bickering we just endured. Rafe went round and slid into his seat starting the car and leaving his friends without a ride as we departed the venue.

We sat silence, as he drove and I let my gaze wander out the window the harsh words still running through my head.

Dirty.

Low.

Pathetic.

I was so wrapped up in the negative thoughts I hadn't even noticed Rafe had stopped the car. I was snapped out of my daze when Rafe's hand skimmed over mine and jumped in slight fright.

He furrowed his eyebrows as my eyes harshly scanned over him as if we were still enemies. After I realized how cold I must've looked my gaze softened and muscles relaxed.

"Sorry" I whispered as his thumb grazed over the back of my hand a gentle smile on his lips.

"Don't be" he said swiftly as I took notice of where he had stopped, which was outside our school. I leaned forward in my seat curiously as I furrowed my own eyebrows.

"What are we doing here?" I asked and flashed Rafe a very puzzled smile.

"I thought we could have a wander around and make tonight a dare night, except it will be at school"he said and gestured to the school as I slight smirk fell upon my lips.

"Well, we can't walk together otherwise you might steal my dares for tonight" I said and slipped my hand from out under Rafe's as I moved to exit the car. Rafe had a small grin on his face but also a wicked gleam in his eye as he watched me leave him.

"See you at 10 tonight Cameron!" I yelled to him and twirled myself around taking my adventurous mind into the empty school.

It was payback time.
