13.

Mae's pov

My mouth fell open when I realized what Rafe Cameron was doing whilst I had gotten changed. I watched as he picked up my clothes that had been strewn everywhere moments before and fold them neatly in a pile on the end of my bed. My cheeks flushed red when I realized some of the items in that pile which I thought where reserved for my eyes only, were also folded neatly.

"Rafe..." I breathed a little lost for words as I watched him fold a pair of my underwear without a second thought. He looked up contently and raised an eyebrow continuing his folding.

"Yes?" he stated bluntly as I starred on face still red and mouth slightly a gape.

"What are you doing?" I asked and walked closer to him and grabbed his wrist stopping him from folding. He looked at me confused by my actions and gently put my t-shirt down.

"Folding your clothes... ?" the word falling slowly from his lips as if he was questioning his own actions. I shook my head and averted my eyes away from his face realizing what a dumb question it was.

"Why? And some of those clothes should not be in your hands" I said my throat dry as I starred at the small pile of under garments. He laughed softly and his hand placed on my shoulder as he ducked his head lower so his eyes could be level with mine.

"Minnie Mae, do you think I haven't seen bra's and underwear before?" he taunted me as an annoyed smile crept onto my face. I hit his arm and rolled my eyes at the smug boy.

"So.. it doesn't mean you can touch mine" I said and moved out of his grip taking the clothes and putting them away. He muttered something under his breath and my head whipped back around questioningly. He glanced away eyes wide for a moment as he thought I might've heard what he had said, but the sheer look of confusion in my face quickly told him I hadn't.

I sighed and ruffled my hair dismissing my want to know what he said. I grab my phone and wallet before heading before going back to the window. I jump when Katelyn promptly jumps out from the corner when she hears the window slide open. I clasp a hand over my chest as her face holds a beaming smile before she realizes there is a figure standing behind me. Her smile fades as is replaced with a very confused and concerning look at me as she takes in Rafe's presence.

"Outside now" she states and I sigh heavily and hold a hand back to Rafe motioning for him to stay where he was. I follow Katelyn over to her roof across from my bedroom window.

"What. The. Actual. Hell." She states pointing to my window behind me her eyes wide as she stares at me in disbelief.

"I can explain it all" I said not allowing mixed up thoughts to creep into her imaginative mind.

"You better" she says bluntly crossing her arms over her chest.

"I got harassed by this Josh guy, Rafe stood up for me, like big time, then we got suspended for a couple days" I said rambled my eyes and hands frantically failing everywhere as I speak. She starred at me shocked as I hand raked back through her hair as she processed it all.

"But why he is in your room?!" she snapped a little loudly and I ducked my head realizing I didn't have the best response to her question.

"Well I dared him to take me to town and go shopping but first I had to get changed. So we came here, dared him to come up the tree and he just came into my room with me" I stated blankly and dully as she sighed at me.

"May I remind you that your room is for friends and family not enemies" she said and gestured to herself.

I sighed deeply as mixed emotions about her calling him my enemy rushed around in my head.

"Kate, we are school partners for the rest of the year, he has apologised for everything he has done whether he realized it or not. I accepted it." I started to whisper softly to her.

"He has been so much nicer since and he stood up for me today something he usually wouldn't do" I said my eyes gentle and fond as I thought over his actions. She looked at me bewildered by my sudden change of heart.

"You're not saying-" she started and I quickly cut her off.

"Yes, Kate I am." I said bluntly and looked back up at her seriously.

"No Mabel-" she started trying to change my mind but I just looked at my best friend who didn't want me too say the next words and I felt an urge to just let them slip. She was my best friend I thought she would understand but obviously her thoughts and views on Rafe had still not changed and were heading a completely different direction to me.

"He's my friend" I said and nodded approvingly looking back at my bedroom window where he stood aimlessly in my room. I smiled a small smile to myself as I watched him look around my room trying to find something to occupy his mind while we bickered.

Katelyn slowly sat down on her roof looking up at me in stunned silence. She looked at me as if I was delusional, as if this was just all in her head, as if I wasn't the person she had known her whole life. I sunk down to meet her eyes but they were blank in a far distant place.

"Katelyn?" I questioned.

"Mabel... just please.. just go" she whispered ducking her eyes away from me. I swallowed the lump in my throat and stood up again. I opened and closed my mouth  but nothing came out and I stood in front of my best friend, I found myself at a loss for thoughts as well.

I turned slowly and I felt if I was no longer in my body, every moment felt limp as I made my way back into my room. I must've looked pale and sick because Rafe looked at me with such a deep concern.

"Mae?" he asked softly as my eyes were covered by a fog. I stood there frozen in a cold chill as I wrapped my arms around myself. I turned my head towards the window as I peered out to where Katelyn sat in disbelief her knees curled into her chest.

"What happened? Did you have fight?" he asked connecting the dots together his eyebrows furrowed. I huffed annoyed and hurt and pulled my curtains so I couldn't see her anymore.

"Shit. What did you two fight over?" he questioned once more raking his hand through his hair in distress as he looked at how annoyed and sad I was at the same time.

"You"
