Mae's pov
I sat across from a very disinterested Rafe Cameron. A scowl was permanently forced on his face and had a sharp glare at nearly everyone but his friends. Today I was not considered his friend or even his girlfriend with the extra amount of dislike he looked at me with those cold blue eyes. Although it was to be expected, after all I was the source of his bad attitude.
I had told him that I didn't want to attend the Mid-Summers with him as after the influences of Principal Thornton I believed it would undermine my own proper presence and I would be seen as 'side-kick' of sorts. I still wanted to enter separately as I do need to seem as my own person, but I didn't want Rafe to be all grumpy and grouchy at me. It could only make matters worse if Principal Thornton's statements word were true.
So here I sat in maths watching as Rafe had his head leaned into his palm as he focused on the work in front of him. He was clutching his pen rather tightly and his jaw was clenched signs that his anger was not only mental but showing physically. I tried to get his attention by flicking my gaze at him and sighing much to everybody's annoyance, but I didn't care about them and they certainly didn't care about maths either.
I waved my pencil slightly further out in front of me as I tried to get Rafe's attention which did work. His hand stopped moving and his eyes lifted up to fixate on my moving pencil, he knew it was mine and he just shrugged his shoulders and continued to work. Dismissing me as if nothing had happened.
"Rafe.." I whispered but he just shifted in his seat and didn't respond to my voice.
I was starting to get annoyed myself at how stupid he was being, he wasn't even hearing me out and the reasons for my actions. I ran a hand back through my own hair, fiddling with the ends as I now furrowed my eyebrows in my own frustration as I watched him work.
I stopped for a moment to fiddle around in my pencil case for a piece of paper or a sticky note. Thankfully I had a small pad of sticky notes left, I rapidly started to jot down my words of a dare which he couldn't resist, it was against the rules to do otherwise. I could feel his gaze skim over me, most likely with curiosity at the fact my attention was no longer fixated on him.
I then folded it up and chucked it onto Rafe book, who tried to flutter his gaze back to his work before I noticed he was starring at me. I watched as he leaned back in his seat putting his pencil down to pick up the folded note. A heavy sigh fell from his lips as he unfolded it giving me a swift glare before diverting his eyes to the words I had written.
Raferty, there is no way you will go with me after school to anything I please. Your M&M's.
His eyes lifted up ever so slowly as if he couldn't bare the motion of looking me in the eye. I smiled gently and innocently as his eyes collided with mine, mine soft and pleading and his harsh and resentful. I swallowed at the look and raised an eyebrow asking him whether he would do it. He breathed out heavily and titled his head away for a moment considering whether he wanted to agree or be defiant.
He turned his head back towards me and fumbled the note between his fingers as his eyes looked me up and down. I patiently waited with a curious look in my eye and my fingers nervously fiddling together underneath the table.
"I'll talk to you after school Mae." he said grouchily as if he was scolding me like a parent to a disobedient child. I smiled happily knowing that at least he was willing to talk to me and now just ignore my presence.
"Mae Murchison! Is normal distribution discrete or continuous? " My teacher snapped after witnessing my note passing, non-working environment and just not paying attention in general. However I was ahead of the class and so was Rafe as we work together, so I thankfully knew the answer otherwise I'd be caught out of my depth.
"Continuous" I state clearly with a darling smile as my teacher nods with a hint of surprise hidden in her eyes.
The class seemed to drag on and all I wanted was for it to be the end of the day so I could speak to Rafe. I was tapping my foot on the floor and as soon as that bell ring I bolted out of my seat. I got a few weird stares for that but when do I not get weird stares. I glanced at Rafe before leaving the classroom, I could just make out a faint grin on his lips; probably at my eager manner.
I quickly rushed to my locker and shoved my books back into it, at this point it was so disorganized it was a blessing I could still find my books. I then made my way towards Rafe's locker where his friends also were. Josh rolled his eyes when he noticed my presence making the group open up to look at me. I shyly smiled and did an awkward wave for absolutely no reason what-so-ever.
"What are you doing?" Josh spat with a menacing glare. I rolled my eyes back at him and parted my lips to reply but a familiar voice bet me to it.
"She's here to debate with me" He said as I nodded with my lips in a smile before furrowing my eyebrows as his words finally sunk in.
"Debate?" I questioned and turned around confused as I stared up at him.
"Yes, debate" he bluntly said back and flared his eyes as to say 'that what I said'
"What are we debating about? or over?" I continued to question and tilted my head to the side wondering what on earth we were debating for.
" We're debating about the fact I will not be going with you today" he said with a sigh and pushed past me as I saw a smug Josh out the corner of my eye.
"Why would that be? You can't anyways! I dared it.." I rambled and pushed my way into the group and stood beside his open locker. He didn't meet my eyes as a heavy sigh slipped from his lips.
"I can if I don't like it. You did." He stated irritability as I sucked in a breath of frustration.
"Only if it is life changing! Mine was also way different compared to yours!" I exclaimed and crossed my arms over my chest. I watch as Rafe try to rack his mind of something to counter but he couldn't. Instead he closed his locker and turned with his head down as he scratched the back of his neck.
"Well?" I pestered him for an answer and raised an eyebrow. He lifted his head and gave a fake smile and a sarcastic thumbs up. I smiled brightly and leaned forward to grab his hand before turning on my heel and dragging him away from his friend group. His friends just seemed a little annoyed that I won Rafe over them again.
"Where are we going?" he questioned and wiggled his fingers in my grasp which just made my smile grow even bigger.
"We are going to find outfits for Mid-Summers"
