I forgot to say this last time that this book is set before John B knew about the gold and all. This is set when Rafe is in high school so a few years before all of it.
Now onto the story.
Mae's pov
Katelyn started to walk fastaer when she saw our school campus, probably excited to see our common room where she would no doubt eavesdrop on all the gossip. I hesistated at the edge of the grounds and seeing as our arms were linked it made Katlyn jolt back.
She opened her mouth about to spit out some annoyed comment when her brown eyes crashed into my fearful blue ones. Her face softened knowing exactly why I had chosen to stop.
"Hey, hey. Don't get all scared now. Remember you are just as good as them, if not better." She said calmly and started to pull me forward. I needed to be academically elite to be able to gain a scholarship for university but that meant a lot of torment from Kooks in the classroom. Some of them stung a little and therefore I didn't want to hear them again but every time I walked through those classroom doors, there was a chance I would hear them again.
I sighed and pushed the fear to the back of my head. I lifted my head higher and stood a little taller as we passed younger students who seemed a little terrified by us. I laughed to myself at the prospect of people being scared of me.
We were nearing our common room when Katelyn unlinked our arms as she bounced on her feet taking off in front of me. I rolled my eyes at her childish ways but I couldn't help but smile on at her.
"Wait for me!" I said and went to take off after her when someone blocked my path. My eyes widened and I jumped a little startled by the persons sudden movements.
"Hey there Minnie Mae, why such a rush?" A chilling voice cooed and I didn't even need to look up to know who it was.
Rafe Cameron
I hated how he called Minnie Mae, I was a decent height of 5'6, but standing in front of him I was a little smaller.
"Well if you really want to know Rafe, I was excited to see our common room" I said bluntly lifting my head with an annoyed expression on my face. His blue eyes gazed down at me as if I was inferior to him, but I guess in his mind I was.
He bit his lip smirking as he glanced elsewhere almost smiling at my comment. I furrowed my eyebrows at his response and went to dart away but he side stepped blocking me once more. I let out a frustrated huff as his eyes met mine once more.
"Sorry but that common room is for Kooks" he said confidence radiating off of him at the fact he was Kook. I rolled my eyes at him and his comment.
"Yeah right, you aren't the only ones on this earth Cameron" I hissed back and crossed my arms over my chest.
"I thought you guys would prefer the wilderness of the outside seeing as a that is were you descended from" he taunted making my blood boil. I glance away regaining my focus not wanting to snap and make myself look like the crazy one out of us.
A smirk quickly rested on my own lips realizing how stupid his accusation was."We all descended from the wilderness you idiot" I said and pretended to step one way before darting the other quickly before he could block me again. I knew his jaw would be clenching with annoyance that I had once again bet him and won the bickering. But I didn't dare look back otherwise he might call out to me again.
I continued to the common room where I found Katelyn lounging on a bench seat outside. She had her arm across her eyes and a pout resting on her lips.
"What are you doing...?" I asked raising an eyebrow as she proped herself by her elbows.
"The Kooks aren't letting in any Pogues" she said in a quiet tone angry and sad at the same time. I groaned thinking back over Rafe's words.
"Of course" I muttered to myself.
I was about to sit down when the school speaker boomed around me.
"Can Rafe Cameron and Mabel Murchison please report to the principal's office" the office lady said blankly over the intercom.
My eyes snapped in the directions of the speaker when my names was called. What on earth did I need to go to the Principals office?
I hadn't even had my first class, I hadn't had my first in class bickering war with Rafe either."I guess I'm gonna miss my physics class" I groaned at the fact I would be falling behind in my first day. Although the thought that Rafe also would did ease the mind a little, couldn't let him get ahead of me.
Katelyn giggled at my comment and waved me off. I pursed my lips and I turned slowly on my heels letting a loud sigh slip from my lips.
I made my way to the Principals office, shuffling my feet as I did so. When I rounded the corner Rafe wasn't standing outside the door. He must be inside with the Principal I thought quickly followed by an he's going to taunt me for being late thought.
I knocked lightly on the door and instead of coming face to face with the Principal, I came face to face with Rafe.
My lips parted in surprise as his curled into an amused smirk.
"well, well, well. You finally made it" he taunted as I scoffed at him. I was already late and I wasn't going to make me look bad by bickering with him here.
Placing a hand on his chest I pushed him to the side as I walked into the room. He flinched back at my hand on his chest before he hissed lowly at me."Don't touch me you Pogue"
I rolled my eyes and looked at the Principals chair which was left empty. My heart rate quickened realising I just entered the office without his permission. I should've known he wasn't here when Rafe answered the door but I got distracted by his taunting ways.
I whipped my head around, eyes wide, looking flustered.
"We need to get out of here! I am not getting a detention because you decided to play make believe in his office" I growled and went to leave when a shadow moved behind Rafe. Rafe's playful smile still stood on his face signalling to me that he didn't know someone was standing behind him.
The shadowy figure stepped forward into the light revealing himself as our Principal and scaring the life out Rafe at the same time.
Rafe jumped as his head snapped back to see who was behind him. I suppressed my laughter and dropped my eyes to the ground.
"Glad to see you both came" Principal Thornton said a happy smile on his lips.
"Now please sit down I need to talk to you both" he said his face becoming serious as he walked behind his desk.
I inhaled sharply not liking his serious tone. I better not get a detention it would stain my perfect record. It wasn't even my fault I was in the office, Rafe tricked me.
Rafe cast a weary glance towards me, waiting for me to move first. I let the thought pass and took my seat. Shortly followed by Rafe as we waited to hear the reasons for which we had been called for.
I hoped they were good because I was missing physics for this.
