Nathan Thorn
November 14, 1944
Hürtgen, Germany

After what happened in Acchen, nothing will be the same. But we finally got a foothold into Germany. The gateway to the Rhine is open, and there's no turning back..for any of us.

It's been three weeks since Acchen. Since Anna. We're clearing the Hürtgen forest so the convoy can get to the Rhine.

I glance over at Daniels who's reading that letter from all this weeks ago. It's taken him this long to do it.

Zussman: If it's over, we're here for you, pal.

Stiles: I tried to warn you.

Nathan: Hey college, let the man speak.

Daniels: Hazel's pregnant.

We all immediately smile.

Nathan: Whoa!

Zussman: Hey, that's huge!

Aiello: All right! Daniels is gonna be a daddy!

We're all excited and happy for him. But Daniels is quiet.

Daniels: She was tryin' to let me know but..I wasn't ready to hear it.

We all go silent.

Nathan: Okay.. I think I can use another cup of Joe.

Zussman: Come on you mooks, let's give him some space.

Stiles: But I don't want coffee.

Nathan: Sure you do.

I glance at him, motioning to Daniels with my eyes. Stiles gets up and follows us out of the tent.

----------

Turner: Everyone gather around.

Stiles: Where's Daniels?

Zussman goes back to the tent and gets Daniels. They come out and we stand in front of Colonel Davis, waiting for his little speech.

Davis: The Hürtgen is dark and nearly impenetrable. Our mission is to take Hill Four-Nine-Three.

We points to his clipboard, holding the position of the hill.

Davis: Whoever holds the hill dominates the valley. For lesser men, this task might seem insurmountable. But our division boasts a proud history of firsts.

He walks around the group, facing each one of us.

Davis: World War 1, we were first to hold off a German attack, first to launch a counterattack, first to cross the Rhine. Nothing has ever stopped us, nothing ever will!

He moves next to Turner.

Davis: Lieutenant, tell them what we're all about.

Turner stands at attention.

Turner: No mission too difficult. No sacrifice too great. Duty fir-

Davis: I can't hear you!

Turner: No mission too difficult! No sacrifice too great! Duty first!

Davis: That's right. Now get ready to move out!

He leaves with Turner and Pierson and Zussman chuckles a bit.

Zussman: Duty first. Back to the ol' meat grinder.

Daniels: Amen, brother.

Turner: We move out in five.

Everyone goes their separate ways for a bit.

Cook: Hey Nathan, can you do me a favor and bring some chow over to Willis? He's watching the perimeter.
