Kabanata 08

The eighth tick

I was about to ask him, but someone knocked on my door, which made my eyes widen. I gasped and bit my own hand when I looked from it, and back to Kairos.

"Amber..." It was Kuya Xavier's voice that made me panic even more.

I grabbed his hand and pulled him up. "Hide, hide, hide! Bilis!" Tinulak ko siya ulit palabas sa balcony nang mas lalong lumakas ang katok. I opened the door and pushed him outside. Kasabay nang pagsara ko, ang pagbukas naman ng pinto ng kwarto ko.

"Nyxene—"

My body jumped a bit when I looked at him. "Kuya!" Tumawa ako nang pilit at umiwas ng tingin. "You're there pala..."

"Are you okay? I heard you shouting." My eyes went back to him when he said that.

Ngayon ko lang napansin ang polo, coat, at slack na suot niya. He just got home from work, siguro.

I brought my hands to my back and tightened my hold on the door handle, leading to where Kairos is. I forcefully chuckled again. "I... I..."

He raised his brow at me. "You what?"

My eyes blinked. I shook my head slowly. "I didn't shout kaya..." My lips pursed. "Baka you're having a... Ano..."

"Ano?" Nanghahamon niyang tanong.

I raised my chin in confidence too. "A dream lang!"

His forehead creased. "I wasn't sleeping when I heard you."

I scrunched my nose, "Baka too much work lang... Kung ano-ano nang naiisip mo, Kuya." I gulped when he squinted his eyes at me. "W-Why are you looking at me like that?"

He was about to step into my room, so my hands moved on their own. I brought them in front of me and shook them at the same time. "Kuya! Look!" I turned my whole body around. "I'm still in my outfit na ginamit ko for school kanina."

He raised his brow at me. "So?"

My lips quivered. "So..." I gulped and heaved a deep sigh. "I just woke up!" He was about to say something, but I added my defense. "Kasi after Kuya Driver fetch me kanina, I slept kaagad. And..." I pouted and nodded my head. "Yeah... So, impossible naman na marinig mo akong sumisigaw, right? Kasi nga I just woke up."

Mas lalong tumaas ang kilay niya nang may lumabas na pilit na tawa ulit sa bibig ko. It's very halata na force lang unlike kanina. I cleared my throat, "I mean..." and turned my body around again. "Look at my clothes!"

Both of us stared at each other: he was observing me, while I was trying my best to smile innocently. I almost said my thanks when he sighed after a few seconds, giving up na on our staring contest. I won in the end!

"Fine... Go change your clothes — and bumaba ka na."

My eyes blinked. "Why should..." Humina ang boses ko nang taasan niya ulit ako ng kilay. "I... Go... Downstairs?" I asked, unsurely.

Before he could even say something, Kuya Zyler, who appeared behind his back, looking so sleepy, took both of our attention.

Kinamot niya ang leeg niya at humikab. "I heard Nyx shouting..."

My eyes widened. I formed an 'x' on my hand, trying to stop him from talking. But because his eyes were closed, he couldn't see me doing that.

"Sigaw nang sigaw! Ano bang pinuputak niyan?" He again, ranted.

Oh my gosh! What the hell?! Is he just plain stupid or what?

I straightened my body when Kuya Xavier looked back at me. Bumalik ang pagdududa sa mga mata niya na ikinakaba ko nanaman ulit.
