Kabanata 28

The twenty-eighth tick

After that, the next day, I haven't seen Kairos since I woke up. Even Atlas was no longer in our house na, since it was already a quarter to two when I rose up from my bed. So, I spent my whole Sunday without seeing a single glimpse of them.

"Ma'am, sa school po ba tayo ni Kairos?"

I smiled and nodded my head before leaning my back against the seat. Seeing that, Kuya Driver started driving, while I busied myself outside the window of our car.

I yawned in the middle of our trip. I blinked my eyes repeatedly when I felt my vision getting blurry.

"Kuya, don't wait for me na... Hanggang mamaya pa me rito, eh." I said, after he stopped the car in front of the entrance.

He nodded his head. "Sige, Ma'am."

I waved my hand before getting out of our car. Karamihan sa mga estudyante ay palabas na, kaya naging mabilis lang sa'kin ang pumasok nang hindi hinihingan ng ID.

Nilibot ko ang tingin ko sa kabuuhan ng gym, hinahanap si Kairos, pero kahit saan ako lumingon ay wala akong nakita ni isang anino niya. My lips pouted as I walked toward his teammates, who were busy putting on their shoes. Some are already warming up, so I made my steps fast before they joined them too.

"Hello..." I smiled when they looked back at me. "Si Kairos?"

Nagtinginan sila bago ulit ibalik ang tingin sa'kin. A man stood up — the guy who first put on his shoes. "Ikaw yung palaging dayo rito para panoorin si Kairos, no?"

My eyes blinked, "Uh... I guess?" hindi ko siguradong sagot.

Another man stood up and started hitting his shoes on the floor. It made a squeaking sound because of that. "Siya 'yon..." He stretched his arms and looked back at his teammates. "Yung palaging pinapanood si Cap..." Tumingin ulit siya pabalik sa'kin. "Jowa ka ba niya? Kapag tinatanong namin dati, hindi sumasagot, eh."

I bit my lip. "Hmm... Uh... Kahapon kami naging ano..."

"Kahapon kayo naging mag-on?" Tanong niya ulit.

My head tilted, "On..?" ulit ko nang hindi siya maintindihan.

"Bobo ka..." The first guy smacked him on his back, which made him wince. "Kitang yayamanin damitan niyan tuwing nanonood tapos gagamitan mo ng kajejehan mo."

My forehead creased, "What's kajejehan?" maarte kong tanong.

"Wala... Wala..." He shook his head. "Ano si Cap nga pala pinauwi ni coach."

My lips parted. I leaned toward the railings out of panic. "Why? What happened? Is he okay? Did he get into a fight or what?"

"Easy ka lang!" He ran his fingers through his hair. "Ayon..." He sighed. "Mukhang masama kasi pakiramdam; parang bibigay na ang katawan, eh."

I gulped. "T-Thank you... Uh..." I took a step back and waved my hands at them. "I'll go to him nalang, thank you." Sabi ko, hindi na sila hinintay pang sumagot. I dashed out of the gym and to his school gate.

My heart started throbbing as I walked to his apartment. It's a couple of blocks away from his school, and I don't want na pabalikan pa si Kuya Driver to hatid me there. So, I decided to make my legs work nalang. It's exercise na rin for me! Pababa na ang araw, at ang mga kasabayan ko ay puro estudyante lang din, o di kaya yung mga nagtitinda sa small cart sa gilid-gilid.

I bit my lip when I saw a familiar white building. Mas binilisan ko pa ang paglalakad ko papunta ro'n. I started fanning myself after opening the gate. Kahit pinagpapawisan ay hindi ko na pinunasan 'yon at umakyat sa hagdan, papunta kung nasaan siya nakatira.
