Goodbye, Oakland

I'm ready to leave this hell hole. The food sucks, being stuck in this bed sucks. I've pretty much had it in here and I'm ready to blow my brains out, but then I won't see Amber anymore, unless I purposely injure myself. Her, along with the whole team and my mom, have been keeping me sane during my stay, but there's just something about Amber that's got me hooked in some way, and I always smile when she's around. As I was about to doze off, the door to my hospital room opened and in walked Amber, this time she's not wearing her scrubs and is wearing a hoodie, a pair of sweatpants complete with a pair of white hi-tops. I'm honestly confused on why she's here, especially at this hour.

"What're you doing here?" I asked her, sitting up slightly in my hospital bed. She smirked and sat down on the seat next to my bed. "To see you," She answered, "That a crime?"

"No." I responded.

"Good."

We both looked at each other for a moment, studying each other. She had a nose ring on and her brown hair was in a messy bun. She smiled a little and I couldn't help but smile back.

"So, whatcha thinking about?" She asked me, her voice full of curiosity.

"You," I admitted and she smiled, "I'm thinking about you and how you've been really nice to me."

"Oh, so you like me?" She said with a smirk, her eyes twinkling.

"I-I didn't say that." I said, blushing a bit, "I just said you were nice."

"Uh huh," She said, "Kayla Patterson, the on field firecracker, is blushing. Interesting."

I rolled my eyes and looked away, trying to hide my blush. "Shut up." I said, but I couldn't help but smile a little.

Amber laughed, "What? It's cute." She said, her voice full of amusement. I groaned and covered my face with my hands, my blush not fading. Amber kept laughing for a moment before it quieted down again, and she moved her chair closer to my bed.

"You know, I'm glad I got to meet you." She said, her voice soft and gentle, "You're a different kind of person, and I like that."

I uncovered my face and looked at her, my blush still present on my cheeks. "What do you mean?" I asked her.

"You don't let anyone walk all over you," She said, "You stand up for yourself and others, and you're always fighting for what you believe in. That's something that I admire about you. You're a fighter, and I can respect that. Plus, standing up for your mother is really something, and that's a trait that not many people have."

I looked away, my heart beating faster. This girl is seriously making me blush like crazy. "U-uh, thanks." I said, my voice quiet. Amber smiled and looked back out the window, the moonlight shining on her face, "You're welcome," She said. "Normally I never come in after hours, but I heard you were leaving tomorrow, I had to come see you one last time."

I looked at her in surprise, "You did?" I asked and she nodded, still looking out the window.

"Yeah," She said, her voice slightly sad, "I'm gonna miss you, Kayla."

My heart skipped a beat and I felt something inside me that I never felt before. I don't know what it is, but I think I like it. I looked away, not sure what to say, and Amber looked back at me, a soft smile on her lips.

"I'm gonna miss you too," I finally said, and a small smile spread across Amber's lips. "But I'm definitely going to see you tomorrow, so yeah." We both just looked at each other for a few moments, not saying anything, and then Amber finally looked away, breaking the silence.
