They waited in the waiting room until they were called back
"Hello I'm gonna be your doctor today I just need to ask some questions before we get started .." the doctor said, "what brings you in today ?" She asked sitting down " I got dizzy and he's concerned ." Tk said, "Dizzy has this happened a lot ?" She asked, "A few times it's probably just because I haven't been sleeping that much and I've been working more shifts -." Tk said "He's been losing weight without trying he was sick the other day .." Carlos said
" you were sick -what were your symptoms ?" She said " I had a fever, I was throwing everything up .." Tk said "He could barely stay awake .." Carlos said, "Okay, and may I ask what's the bruise on your arm from ?" She said, " I banged into the rig ." Tk said "That's a pretty easy bruise for just banging into the rig
"We're going to need to take some blood ." She said, "Is something wrong ?" Carlos asked nervously "We don't know yet .." she said "But I would like you to stay overnight but you can stay in your clothes we will only need to take some blood and monitor you ." She said
"You should go home and get some sleep." Tk said looking at Carlos "I'm not leaving you ." Carlos said rubbing tks hand " I should have known something was wrong im a paramedic." tk said looking at the ceiling
"Hey, none of that ." Carlos said, "For all, we know it could just be a stomach bug ." Carlos said kissing Tks on the forehead
A few hours passed before the doctor came back in "So you didn't have the stomach flu.." she said,
"That's good ." Carlos said "You have leukemia.. Stage 3 ." the doctor said
Tks eyes went blank "I understand this is hard to process but it seems that you've had it for 4 months now - it's fast progressing so we have to act fast ." she said
"But wouldn't he have experienced symptoms a few months ago ?" Carlos said holding tks hands tightly
" Most patients with leukemia don't experience symptoms until the 3-4 month stage and that's why he's just started experiencing these symptoms.." she said
"We need to start chemo relatively soon to give you a better shot at beating this thing. We are keeping you overnight but we would like to start chemo first thing in the morning and have you out of here by the afternoon with you coming in every other day for chemo," she said
"How long can I work for before im useless ?" tk questioner that was the first words he spoke since receiving the news "After two weeks of chemo your condition will worsen you'll lose weight, you'll be tired most of the time, you'll be very weak, you'll lose your hair, you'll be sick all the time it's not going to be easy ." She said "boyfriend?" The doctor asked looking at Carlos's concerned face " fiancé ." Carlos corrected
" his temperature will need to be taken every morning every night if he is even slightly in the fever zone he needs to come in." She said " he's gonna need your help ." She said "ill let you guys get some rest ." She said walking out of the room "you should um - you should go home and get some rest these chairs aren't good for your back ." Tk mumbled "Tk -." Carlos said "its fine I just want you to get some rest ." Tk said "ill be fine just please ." Tk said looking at Carlos
"I love you okay ." Carlos said kissing Tk's head " you need me call me." Carlos said " I will." Tk said he watched as Carlos left
It's not that he didn't want Carlos there he wanted him to be there more than ever to hold his hand tell him its gonna be okay
But he had already ruined so many things now he ruined their relationship he didn't want to put Carlos through this
He closed his eyes as a few tears came down his face
When Tk woke up in the morning carlos was already back " did I wake you ?" Carlos asked quietly Tk shook his head lightly " the nurse said that once your up their gonna come in and get you hooked up to chemo ." Carlos said " I got you something ." Carlos said giving Tk a small gift bag Tk opened the bag to show a Stuffed tiger " I love it thank you ." Tk said as the nurse came into the room " were just gonna get you hoked up 4 hours and then your free to go home and rest ." The nurse said " your gonna feel a little discomfort while I put your Iv in but other than that you'll feel nothing
Carlos grabbed Tk's hand and held it tight the nurse put Tk's IV in Carlos watched as Tk squinted his eyes closed " okay your all done a nurse will come check on your every now and then and then you should be able to go home by 12 ." She said
"You hear that - just a few hours and then we can go home ." Carlos smiled " I have work till 8 and then we have to have dinner with your parents." Tk said " Tk - your still thinking about going to work ?" Carlos asked " ill be fine I promise I just - I want to work as long as I can before I'm useless ." Tk said " okay well I can cancel dinner tonight we can have a night in ." Carlos said " ill be fine I bring my clothes to the station pick me up ?" Tk asked "yeah ." Carlos said
The nurse came into unhook Tk from the chemo " congrats your done your first chemo session ." The nurse said " ill see you soon okay ?" The nurse said as Tk nodded when the got into the car Carlos got a blanket out of the back that he brought for Tk " its a little ways home you can take a nap if you want ." Carlos said draping the blanket over Tk " i don't want you having to ride in silence ." Tk said looking at Tk
" i don't mind ." Carlos smiled softly taking Tk's hand into his Own there was dark circles underneath Tk's eyes he knew that later Tk's symptoms would worsen as the hours progressed but he knew how important helping people was and he wanted to let Tk do that as long as possible
Tk went to work putting his stuff in his locker before heading to Tommy's office " hey cap you have a few ?" Tk asked
"Yeah of course ." She said " you look worse then you did yesterday hat happened ?" She asked " chemo happened .." Tk said bluntly " i went to the hospital after my shift yesterday.. leukemia stage 3 they gave me first chemo today .." Tk said biting his nails " I'm sorry i didn't -." Tommy said " It's okay i know i look horrible ." Tk said with a little "you should be resting ." Tommy said " cap- i wanna help as many people as i can before I'm useless ." Tk said " ill be fine i just need your support on this .." Tk said " i fully support you and you always have a place on my team ." Tommy said " and if you need anything sweetheart just tell me ." She said " thanks ." Tk said softly
The day was draining he was already out of it but he was nauseous which led to many bathroom breaks which turned into bark sessions
