The signs were in front of him the whole time
Maybe if he noticed just maybe their little girl wouldn't be in the hospital hooked to 5 different machines
Zoning out
Bedwetting
The clumsiness
Vomiting
Extreme sleepiness
All were signs leading up to the main event
Carlos rushed into the hospital getting a
Pass as quickly as possible before meeting Tk outside mayas door
"What happened? Is she okay ?" Carlos said, "She's okay she's just sleeping but I need you to calm down ." Tk said tks brain was going crazy but nobody could see it he didn't want anyone to see it - Maya is what mattered right now
"When she wakes up she needs both of us to be calm so she doesn't worry.." Tk said stroking Carlos's cheek "Right -" Carlos said his breathing slowing "Right calm- I can do that ." Carlos said, " I don't - what happened ?" Carlos asked he could see the fear in Carlos's eyes
"the teacher says she was in the hall getting ready to head to lunch with her class and she just started seizing ." Tk said he watched as Carlos looked in at Maya she looked so peaceful with her bunny cuddled close to her chest "What about her test? Did her test come back?." Carlos asked, "Not yet but they will okay we just need to stay positive ." Tk said rubbing Carlos's back
"Thank you for being here so quick - and for calming me down ." Carlos did hugging tk Tk just kept thinking what he knew would calm Carlos down "How are you doing ?" Carlos asked pulling back from the hug "I'm good ." Tk said forcing a smile he hoped Carlos couldn't see through
"Are you Maya's parents ?" the doctor asked, "yeah that's us," Carlos said as he gripped tks hand he had never been so glad Tk was a paramedic god forbid whatever news the doctor was about to tell them Tk would be able to do most of the care and checkups that would be required
" so we did a test that we commonly use when seizures are the case it's called an Electroencephalogram and her scans came back positive for epilepsy .." the doctor said
"Luckily now that we know what it is we can treat it and she can go back to normal life. I'd like to put her on Gabapentin it should lessen her risk of seizures although it has some side effects that come with it they could fade over time she may experience tiredness and fever can be common throughout the medication ."
"I know this diagnosis seems scary but as long as she takes her medicine you guys will be fine. Now I understand that you're a paramedic ." the doctor said gesturing to Tk
"You can just do a routine checkup now and then to give you guys a little more peace of mind ." The doctor said softly
Tk didn't say anything he just nodded how could he give her checkups if he could barely realize what the problem was when the signs were right in front of him
"I'll get her started on the medication today we will see how she does and if all goes well you guys should be home by tomorrow morning ." The doctor said
"We got this right ?" Carlos said turning to Tk "Yeah.. look everything's gonna be okay ." Tk said
Later that night Tk turned to Carlos "It's getting late you should go home and get some rest .." Tk said running his hand through Carlos's curls "What about you ?" Carlos said looking into Tk's eyes " I'll stay here in case she wakes up you had a long shift ." Tk said stroking Carlos's face " But so did you ." Carlos said searching Tk's eyes "I'll be fine get some rest okay ." Tk said kissing Carlos's head
Carlos eventually left but once he got into the loft he knew that it just felt wrong - he knew Tk better than anyone and he could tell when he was faking being okay he grabbed a duffle out of the closet before grabbing Tk's throw off the back of the couch a pair of sweats and a hoodie that wasn't Tk's but he stole often so it might as well be Carlos loved when Tk wore his APD hoodies he loved how they swallowed Tk's body how small Tk looked yet so cozy he grabbed a few books for Maya along with some of her favorite dolls before heading out
Tk leaned the back of his head against the glass
He felt so bad - how could he not have noticed
The signs were all in front of him and he just turned a blind eye to them a knock on the door came "Miss me ?" Carlos asked giving a little smile "I thought - you were supposed to get some rest." Tk said "I couldn't even think of sleep knowing you're here freaking out .." Carlos said kissing Tk's head "You may be able to fool everyone but you can't fool me ." Carlos said
Carlos sat down pulling Tk close " I just - I can't believe I missed all the signs - and now she's here .. that wasn't supposed to happen ." Tk said as Carlos rubbed his back
" Tyler half of the signs were all things kid's experience and besides your job is to be her father, not her paramedic ..." Carlos said, " it's okay and you know what now we know what's wrong and she's gonna be just fine," Carlos said softly they stayed like that for an awhile Tk just listening to Carlos's heartbeat
"Here you should get changed your probably uncomfortable." Carlos said pulling out the sweats and hoodie he brought "Thanks..." Tk gave a little smile "I love you ." Tk said " I know .." Carlos said
That next morning they came home and got Maya tucked back in her bed " This is much better than the hospital bed ." Maya smiled " I bet ." Carlos said, "Can you guys sleep with me ?" Maya asked, "Yeah bug ." Tk said kissing her head
"Daddy please don't hog the blankets ." Maya laughed " I know right? He's a blanket hog ." Carlos laughed " am not ." Tk said, " I hate you both ." Tk laughed
Their life was nowhere near perfect - but they were all safe and healthy and that's what mattered
