return pt. 2 - j.o

-

It's been a month since your return. Your life was uprooted and turned upside-down, but somehow you were coping.

Eventually, you've gotten the guts to log into Facebook, where you were met with tons of tagged posts following your "death." Most of which are Emma posting on your profile with her life updates, wishing you happy birthdays, or just how much she's missed you.

A photo popped up on your profile from last year. It was of Jenna and Emma, where Jenna had Emma wrapped around her, and Jenna showing off the ring to the camera. Emma captioned the photo, "I hope I can make her as happy as you did. I miss you always."

Tears pricked your eyes and you slammed your laptop shut. You turned to the clock and it was 15 minutes until your shift. The floral shop you worked for before your absence hired you back with no questions asked. It was the only thing that was the same since your return.

-

You had your back to the door making a bouquet when you heard the door chime and someone walked in.

"Welcome to Petal Palace, how can I help yo-" you began while turning yourself around. You cut yourself short when you saw Emma standing at the counter, just as surprised to see you.

Your tone of voice quickly changed. "What are you doing here?"

Tears met Emma's waterline. "I placed an order. Ever since you went missing, I would come here for flowers. I didn't know you were working here again." She tucked a small piece of her short brown hair behind her ear. "Why haven't you talked to me, y/n?"

You wiped your hand with a cloth and tossed it onto the counter. "Perhaps it's because you didn't even have the courage to show up to the airport to see me when I was released," you turned around and grabbed the bouquet you had just curated and brought it back to the counter. "Or maybe it's because you are engaged to my fucking girlfriend," you hissed while putting the custom card into the bouquet.

The card reads

"Happy Anniversary, my love. Here's to many more.

xo, Emma."

"Happy Anniversary," you spat sarcastically.

Emma put her hand around the vase, wiping away a tear. "If only you saw how heartbroken she was when you were gone, y/n, you'd understand. She needed me. We needed each other. We both lost the best person in our life." Her blue eyes glistened with tears.

"I get it, Emma. But you have to understand my side, too. It felt like no time has passed, I lost my girlfriend to my best friend. I'm all alone trying to adjust back to life after missing 5 years of it." Your eyes were now also filled with tears. You wiped a tear that fell and wiped your hands on your apron.

Emma nodded once, not knowing what else to say. She took a moment before speaking. "Thanks for the flowers," she muttered quietly. She began walking towards the door.

"Emma?" You called out to her, causing her to look at you over her shoulder.

"Please take care of her."

Emma nodded and walked out the door, once she was gone you began uncontrollably sobbing.

-

The rest of your shift, you thought about how you wish you never even came back. Wished you'd just be sent into oblivion forever, it would be less painful that way. You planned to begin looking elsewhere to live after your shift.

The lights were dim in the shop while you swept the floor before heading out for the day. The door chimed as it swung open.

"We're closed," you mutter. You turn around to see both Emma and Jenna inside the shop, they both look like they've been crying. You hoped they couldn't notice how puffy your eyes are.

"I'll give you two some time, okay?" Emma whispered quietly, hugging Jenna's shoulder before nodding at you and walking outside.

Before you could get a word out, Jenna ran over to you and hugged you tightly. You melted into her arms, dropping the broom onto the floor.

You couldn't help the uncontrollable cries from spilling from your mouth. Jenna was crying too. You both held onto each other tightly.

After a couple of minutes, your cries settled. You both continued to hold onto each other, Jenna swirling circles on your back with her fingers.

"Five years. Five years I've been waiting to be in your arms again." Jenna said, her voice raspy.

"I can't imagine feeling like it was that long without you," you breathed out a shaky sigh. "I'm glad Emma was there for you... genuinely." It hurt to speak those words, you were supposed to be the person to provide comfort to her, not Emma. Either way, you're grateful she was there while you were gone.

"She pulled me out of a very dark place," she pulled away slightly to look up at you. "But you're back now."

You bit down on your lip. "I'll be leaving."

"What?" She looked at you with widened, heartbroken eyes. "No, I just got you back."

"Jenna," you looked deeply into her eyes. "You built a beautiful new life without me, I saw all of the Facebook posts. As much as hurts me, I can't ruin that for you."

"You won't! If anything, you'll just ruin everything by leaving again. I'm begging, y/n," she pleaded. "Don't make me lose you a second time, I won't be able to handle it."

Your eyes were locked on hers like a magnet. Watching how her emotion quickly changed from being relieved to be back with you, to scared out of her mind to lose you again. Your heart was breaking, you didn't know what to do.

"But Jenna, I still love you. I'm in love with you. My heart can't handle seeing you with someone else right now." You thought it wasn't possible, but your eyes flooded with tears once again.

Jenna let out a breath, her eyes flicking from your eyes to your lips. She thought for a moment, before letting her heart make the decision for her.

She put her palm behind your neck and she pressed her lips into yours. You felt yourself weaken to her intimacy. Her soft, warm lips moved flawlessly with yours. You pulled her body closer to yours by her hips.

After a few seconds, you pulled away for a breath. Your heart was pounding against your ribcage as you tucked a piece of Jenna's hair to the side.

"Please," she begged once more with a whisper.

The high Jenna's kiss gave you faded quickly to regret. "We can't do this to Emma," you took a step back.

"We won't do anything, we-"

"We just did, Jenna."

Jenna wiped her eyes and nodded. "Just please don't leave me again, you have no idea what that will do to me."

You nodded once and sighed. You could tell she needed you. "Okay."

A small smile tugged at the corner of her lips, she drew you back in for another hug. You kissed the top of her head.

"You should get going," you said softly.

She tried to hide her disappointment by keeping a smile on her face. "Okay, I'll see you soon?"

You nodded, unwrapping yourself from her. Glancing up at the glass doors and windows, you lock eyes with Emma, who has been watching for God knows how long.

She bit the inside of her cheek and quickly disappeared once Jenna approached the exit.
