Is Love Enough

Chapter 2

Adam stared out the window, the streets of Chicago nothing but a blur, Voight had to be pushing ninety miles an hour the blue light flashing.

He felt like he had an elephant sitting on his chest, the contents of his stomach churned he was afraid he was going to throw up, his palms sweaty.

"Here we go, you okay Ruzek?" Voight asked, he slowed the car down, Adam jumping out before he had it in park.

"Kim!" He yelled as he approached the stretcher, his worst fears coming true, Kim was unconscious and her skin a strange grey color, and cool to the touch. He couldn't stop himself, he leaned close and took her face in his hand "Kim" he said again.

"She hit her head, when she fell backwards" Jen told him "Roman went inside" they heard another gunshot.

"I'm going in" Voight announced.

Adam went back over to the ambulance, the paramedics working on Kim. They had inserted and IV started pushing meds.

"Two cars escort that ambulance" Hank told Jen who went off with two other patrol officers "Ruzek, you stay here"

Adam could only nod, here was the last place he wanted to be. He wanted to be in the back of that ambulance with Kim, but he knew that wasn't possible.

"Hey Adam" Sean called out

Adam glanced at his feet, the last person he wanted to talk with was Sean Roman, Kim had told him what an ass Sean was being barely an hour ago.

"Adam, Look I'm..." he started to say Adam didn't want to hear it.

"Not now, Roman" he said biting his tongue afraid he would say or do something he couldn't take back, his heart ached as he watched Sean jump in the back of the ambulance and as he grabbed Kim's hand. It should be him in there, he heard the paramedic tell him they needed to go and he shut the door watching as the ambulance sped away.

His hands on his hips he watched the ambulance until it was out of sight and he turned and went back to the house.

"Where's Ruzek?" Al asked when he stepped inside, Adam having confided in him about his relationship with Kim. "Halstead, where's Ruzek?" Al could only imagine how worried Adam was.

"He's upstairs, in one of the bedrooms" Jay said, "though he isn't much help"

Al went upstairs and found Adam sitting on the edge of the bed his face buried in his hands, Al went and sat beside him "hey, get it together" he told him.

Adam raised his head, "I can't even think straight, Al, it's bad" he said as he visions of Kim being put in the back of the ambulance flashed through his head.

Sean went back upstairs, he couldn't stand it at the hospital any longer, he needed to find who did this to his partner. He could hear voices in one of the bedrooms, he followed them finding Adam and Al sitting on the bed.

Sean stepped in the room, "Detective Olinsky" he said, he watched as Adam turned and looked his way, he was almost positive that if looks could kill he would have been dead by now "I found something in the bathroom"

Adam glared at Olinsky, "yea, show me" Al said, he knew Adam wanted Sean gone. "Ruzek, go" he said.

"Are you sure?" Adam asked "what about Voight?"

"I will talk to him" Al said as he followed Sean down the hallway.

Adam arrived at the hospital, "I'm looking for Officer Kim Burgess" he told the security guard, he lifted his shirt up to reveal his badge "I'm CPD" he said, the security card letting him in the emergency room.

"Can I help you?" the nurse asked when she saw Adam searching the different cubicles.

"Yes, I'm looking for Kim Burgess" he told her.

The nurse thought for a minute "the cop?" she asked.

Adam nodded, "yes, where is she?"

"Are you family?" She asked him as she pulled up the information on the iPad.

"Family, no" Adam told the nurse "she's my girlfriend" he told her, the first person besides his father and Al he had told, he knew it wouldn't be a secret any longer.

As she read the chart, Adam tried to judge her reaction "she's still in surgery but she has already been assigned a room, you can wait in her room if you'd like" she told him "but just be warned one of your fellow cops is up there and she isn't very pleasant"

Adam smiled, he knew exactly who it was "don't worry about her she's all bark, no bite"

Trudy was reading a magazine when Adam walked in, "special sauce, I was wondering when you would get here" she said, she busted his balls on a daily basis but she liked him "how are you holding up?" Trudy asked.

Adam shrugged "I'm trying, can I ask you something?" he had a good idea that she knew about him and Kim but he wasn't sure how, she shook her head yes "how did you know about us?"

Trudy smiled "you two aren't very good at being sneaky, and besides the look in Kim's eyes when you walk in the room is a dead give away, and your goofy smile when's she close doesn't help either"

"Listen, Adam, she's going to pull through" she said as she placed her hand on his back "she's wanted to be with you for a long time, you think she's just going to walk away now?"

Adam smiled, "thanks Sarge, please don't tell anyone about us yet, Olinsky and I think Roman know but that's it" his anger building when he thought of Roman.

Trudy smiled and placed a finger to her lips "your secret is safe with me, special sauce"
