Kim watched as Adam loaded the last of her mother's belongings in the back of his truck, "I hate this Adam, I don't want her to go"He closed the tailgate and pulled her into his arms, her head nestled in the crook of his neck, "She's just ten minutes away and in a really good building. She'll be fine, I'm more worried about you and Nicky" he teased, he knew both of them would miss her, not that he wouldn't but he knew it would hit them both hard. Especially Nicky, the silver lining was that she would still keep him while they worked.
"She missed her independence baby, it'll be good for her" Adam tried convincing her, "it's a good thing, you know"
Kim wiped her eyes, "How is it good?"
Adam laughed, "We won't have to schedule sex anymore since Nicky can go back to his room"
Kim laughed at his comment, "Is that all you think about?" She teased pulling back from his embrace to look him in the eyes.
He shrugged, "Not all I think about, I spend a lot of time thinking about food too" he joked earning a playful slap from Kim, "All kidding aside, this is a good thing. For all of us" he kissed her.
"Thanks for helping" Deb smiled as she embraced him, "it's nice to finally have my own place again"
He smiled, "Living with your kids is never easy" he smiled, "we won't have to do all that sneaking around now you know" he kissed her forehead.
"Oh, I know" she teased, "they still don't know about you. I'm not sure when I should tell them" it had been close to two years since Mike's death but she knew Kim missed him like crazy. She's was the proverbial 'daddy's girl' and Deb was almost certain she'd be angry with her for dating again.
"Whatever you want is fine with me, you never know she may surprise you, ya know?" He ran his hand down her arm, "it's getting late, I should go"
Deb sat up from his embrace, "Don't go, stay the night"
"You sure?"
"Positive"
"C'mon bubs, it's time for bed" Adam pleaded with Nicholas, "aren't you tired?"
He knew he was exhausted and he couldn't understand how his son wasn't.
"Nicky not tired" he folded his arms across his tiny chest, even at three he was still a squirt the doctor was pretty sure he'd always be on the small side, "Nicky wants Gwandma!" His chocolate brown eyes filling with tears.
"Ah, don't do that Nicky" Adam felt for his son.
His bottom lip trembling, "Gwandma!" He demanded again.
Adam finally relented and brought Nicky into their bedroom, Kim laughing when they arrived, "So much for unscheduled sex, huh?"
Adam groaned, "He wants your mom"
Nicky quickly climbed in the bed snuggling into Kim's chest, "Nicky sad, mommy"
The speech pathologist had told them that he'd eventually stop speaking in the third person but it was beginning to seem as if he would never stop.
"I miss grandma too, sweetie, she'll be back tomorrow though. When me and daddy go back to work" she had stopped speaking in the third person when she spoke to him. She was hoping modeling the correct speech patterns would help him to use the correct words.
The next morning Deborah arrived before nine, Nicholas beside himself when she arrived.
"Gwandma home!" He laughed as he jumped into her outstretched arms.
Kim couldn't help but suspect something was different about her mother, she even mentioned it to Adam.
Adam chalking it up to having her own place.
"How's the new place?" Adam asked as he inhaled the eggs she had cooked for them.
"It's wonderful, I've already met the family next door. They're the sweetest people, it's nice to be on my own again" she withheld the part about her boyfriend spending the night. She wasn't quite ready to divulge that nugget just yet.
"That all?" Kim asked suspiciously.
She was sure her mother blushed, "Yes, Kim. That's all" Deborah replied, "Don't you two have to get to work?" She knew an interrogation would be coming her way soon.
"She's right Kim, we gotta go" Adam said checking his phone, "Later bubs, be good for Grandma" he kissed the top of his head.
"Bye daddy" Nicky replied as he grabbed a strip of bacon.
"Bye sweet boy, make sure you listen to Grandma" Kim hugged him, "I love you"
"Call if you need us Mom" Kim said as she hugged Deb on her way out.
"I will, you two be careful" she told them.
"You mind if I head to my dad's for a little while tonight?" Adam asked as they pulled up in front of their house, "like now?"
Kim shrugged, "Everything okay?"
"I think so" Adam told her, leaning over the console to kiss her, "it's just been a while, I feel like we need to catch up. You can hang out with your mom, I won't be too late"
Kim smiled, "I love you. Maybe we might even get some of that unscheduled sex in when you come home" she teased, leaning in for a more passionate kiss.
She could hear Adam groan as they parted, "Make sure bubs is asleep when I get home, I don't care if you have to give him Benadryl or some thing" he teased.
"Adam! That's not even funny" she laughed.
He smiled, "Obviously I'm kidding" he kissed her once more, "or am I?"
"Shut up Adam" she laughed as she left the car, "drive safe"
Bob tossed Adam a beer, "What brings you by son?" He plopped on the couch a Blackhawks game on in the background.
Adam kicked his feet up on the table, "No real reason, it's just been awhile since we hung out. Felt like I needed to check in, make sure you're good"
Bob cocked an eyebrow at him, "Bullshit!" He laughed, "What's going on?"
Adam grinned, "Well, since you brought it up" Adam laughed, "Rumor mill is strong dad, a guy from the 31st said you're dating some chick"
Bob nearly choked on his beer, "Son, since when do you listen to the rumor mill?"
"Good point " Adam laughed, "So you're not seeing anyone?"
Bob set his beer on the table, "I'm not, but if I end up dating some chick as you so eloquently put it, you'll be the first to know" he laughed.
"Alright dad" Adam replied, "You know it wouldn't be a bad thing, you deserve to happy and you and mom have been divorced for decades"
Bob held his hand up, "Son, I'm not dating" he said gruffly, "can we drop it?"
"Yea, fine. I'm sorry"
"How's my grandson?"
Just the mention of Nicholas was enough to make Adam smile from ear to ear, "He's great dad, he amazes me everyday. He's Kim's mini-me. It's wild Dad, he even pouts the same way as Kim" he laughed remembering the temper tantrum from a few nights ago.
"Took you long enough" Kim muttered when she felt the mattress sag under Adam's weight, "how's your dad?"
Adam kicked his shoes off, "Sorry, we got wrapped up in the Hawks game. It went to overtime. My dad's good" he tossed his shirt on the floor, "I'd rather not talk about my dad, I have much better things in mind"
She laughed as he lips descended on her neck, "I bet you do"
