Chapter 21

THREE MONTHS LATER

"Back to work next week?" Jay asked over beers, "we've missed you, believe it or not" he smirked, "Voight's been on my case since you haven't been around to screw shit up"

"Thanks Jay" Adam laughed, "I'm ready to get back, I'm losing my mind being at home all day"

"How are things with Kim?" Jay asked him.

Adam shrugged, "I don't know to be honest" just after the shooting they seemed to be closer than ever, but since then he felt as if she was pulling away or holding back, "I think she's gun shy" he told him, "I don't know, I don't want to pressure her by any means, but I miss her"

"She's been through a lot, she went from being engaged to you, breaking up and then thinking you would die in just a few months" he ordered another round of drinks, "her head probably hasn't stopped spinning yet, give her some time"

"I guess, it just sucks"

"You know she's out with Erin tonight, right?" Jay told him, "at that place a few blocks over"

"Yea?" Adam said, "whaddya say we go join them?"

Kim had her back to the door, but couldn't help but notice  the goofy grin on Erin's face, "what is it?" She laughed.

"Jay and Adam just walked in" Erin got up and met Jay, "I didn't expect you to show up here" she told him.

"I didn't either, it was Adam's idea"

"Well it was a good one"

Adam left Jay and Erin by the bar and went to the table and sat opposite Kim, "hey"

Kim pushed her plate aside, "hey yourself, how are you?" It had been a few days since she had seen him, "you doing okay?"

"I am, got a clean bill of health, go back to work Monday" he told her, "I'm good as new"

"Is Doctor Brantley sure?" She couldn't help but still be nervous.

He reached across the table and took her hand, "I'm good, Kim. I promise. You've been busy?" he asked her, "I thought you would have stopped by my place, I miss you"

"I think I've been avoiding you" she admitted, she was just so torn. She was still angry with him  for keeping the truth from her but she knew she couldn't live without him, "Adam, I miss you too, it's just nothing has changed"

"What do you mean?"

"You still kept the truth from me and it took our friends finding out for you to finally tell me" she knew he regretted it, "when you were shot, I told myself if you survived I wouldn't let another day go by without you in my life" she wiped at the eyes, "but it still hurts that you didn't trust me enough to tell me"

"I know I should have" he told her, "I will regret it for the rest of my life. I want to prove to you that I'm yours until the day I die" he pulled the chain out from his shirt, "I want to put this ring on your finger again"

"Can we just start over? No talk of a wedding, let's just be together?" She asked him, "I love you but I feel like we need to take a step back, let's just see what happens?"

"I will do whatever you need" he smiled.

"Do you wanna get out of here?" She asked him, "my car is here"
