Macon's heart pounded in her chest like a relentless drumbeat as the sound of an approaching enemy ship sent shivers down her spine. She held onto Xane's hand tightly, seeking comfort in his touch, knowing that danger lurked just around the corner. He gestured for her to hide amidst the fallen rubble, and she nodded, her eyes pleading with him not to leave her alone in this terrifying moment.

"Don't go too far," she whispered, her voice trembling with fear. Xane gave her a reassuring smile, a silent promise that he would return to her unharmed.

With a mix of determination and worry in his eyes, Xane stepped out into the street, disappearing into the smoke of the still smoldering buildings. Macon crouched behind the rubble, her heart pounding in her ears as she watched the soldiers enter a nearby ruined building.

Time dragged on as she waited anxiously for his return, every second feeling like an eternity. Her mind was a whirlwind of fear and hope, and she prayed that Xane would come back to her safely, that they would find a way to escape this nightmare together.

Her heart lurched as comms chatter echoed in the distance, and she strained to hear the words. "Nil— do you copy? Nil— we have the girl in custody." Panic surged through her veins as she was grabbed from behind. She slung her body wildly attempting to break-free.

Xane moved like a silent shadow in the dim light, stalking the two soldiers who had strayed from the group. His movements were fluid and calculated, a dance of danger and survival. He closed in on them with a sense of purpose, his eyes never leaving his targets.

Minutes ticked by, and Macon's muscles tensed with anxiety. Her silent screams were masked by the soldier's gloved hand as she watched Xane navigate through the debris and shadows. He was walking right into their trap.

From the shadows, the second soldier lunged at Xane with a fierce determination, and the two men grappled with each other in a desperate struggle for control.

Macon's breath hitched as she watched them fight, her heart aching with worry for Xane's safety. The other male pressed Xane into the ground as Xane grabbed his weapon and pointed it with lethal precision at the other male's chest. He shot.

As Xane freed himself from the weight of the other male, the final rebel took aim, grazing Xane's chest with a laser blast. Pain seared through him, but he refused to show weakness, fighting through the agony. He charged the male, seeing Macon in his arms.

The male, caught between aiming at Macon or taking aim at Xane, fell backward as Xane tackled him to the ground. Macon was slung to the ground with the force, and she went sliding on her back, the rebel's gun sliding and landing against her side.

The males struggled with brute strength evident. Amidst the debris and dim light, Macon turned to see the male as he stabbed Xane. He let out an agonized roar before his body stilled.

Macon's hollow scream tore through the night as the rebel stood, wiping his bloodied lip with the back of his gloved hand. As he approached Macon, she drew the weapon.

"Oh doll, you wouldn't..." his words were cut short as she pulled the trigger— his body crumpling as she ran to Xane.

Macon clung to him, weeping as she held him. His eyes opened as if an answer to her desperate prayers.

"We made it," Xane whispered, his voice hoarse.

Macon nodded, tears blurring her vision. She studied his bleeding wounds. He was losing too much blood.

Her heart filled with desperation, and if she thought things couldn't get any worse, the humming of yet another ship grew louder in her ears.

In the distance, the approaching ship brought a new wave of terror. But Macon knew she had to be strong for Xane, for them both. With grim determination, she pressed her hand to his wounds, trying to stem the flow of blood.

"We are going to make it." she whispered, her voice shaking but filled with resolve as she clutched the gun at her side.

Xane's eyes locked onto hers, love and trust shining through the pain before he lost consciousness.
