Jennifer looked up after she read the note.
She wanted to go to Michal, tell him that his writing was clever and that everything was fine and it would all work out. He seemed better in the letter. He seemed like Michal, and that made Jen happy. Very, very happy.
She wanted to see Michal.
She went upstairs to his door and she stood there for a minute, wondering if she should knock or not.
She ended up knocking, but there was no reply. She looked inside through the peephole. The lights were off, which made her confused. She tried again, and again nothing.
She finally fished out her key that Michal had given her and used it.
She opened the door, and she found the whole apartment empty. She searched and looked and called and he wasn't there.
She reread the note.

Jen's second instinct was to call Michal.
She did.
Her phone shook slightly from her hand as it rang, and a small shudder went through her with each vibration of the rings.
It stopped and she didn't try again.
