"Daddy?" The innocent voice squeaked from behind them, making them jump at the sound before looking at each other with somewhat wide eyes, snapping back into the reality of their lives which they lost hold of for a few minutes.
"Jihye...w-why aren't you asleep baby?" He said, finding his voice again, looking at his daughter with concern as he left Kira's side to approach her, cheeks red from slight embarrassment of being caught by his daughter.
"I can't sleep" Jihye mumbled, rubbing her eyes, but her heart was swelling with joy at the scene she had walked in on, she was too young to understand, but she was starting to see a family like the ones in her textbooks and bed time stories.
"Come on, let's get you back to bed. It's a school night." Jaehyun said strictly, lifting her up into his arms, knowing his daughter had been defying her bedtime recently, an act she usually put up on the days he was more busy to get his attention back to her.
"But daddy my mouth hurts!" Jihye whined, getting Kira's attention, and she trailed behind him slowly
"What do you mean?" He asked, furrowing his eyebrows at her statement as he sat her down on her bed again
"It hurts here" she huffed, pointing to her jaw, close to her ear and Kira's attention spiked at the child expressing her discomfort.
"Did her baby teeth fall out already?" Kira asked, bending down infront of Jihye and Jaehyun and he nodded
"They fell out early for her" he said
"Jihye does it hurt a lot? Can I touch it?" She asked, and the girl nodded, allowing her to lift up her hand to feel her jaw, immediately wincing as she put some pressure against her gums
"Jae do you have any gloves?" She asked and he nodded, rushing out to the bathroom
"And a thermometer!" She added and he quickly returned back with the two items, worry laced on his face as he bent down beside Kira.
"Here, hold this" she said, turning on the flashlight on her phone before passing it to Jaehyun who insantly followed her orders
"Jihye, sweetheart I'm just going to take a look inside your mouth okay? Can you say 'ah'?" Kira asked, quickly slipping the blue latex gloves onto her hands
"Will it hurt?" Jihye asked
"I'll try my best not to, let me know as soon as it hurts okay?" Kira said and she nodded, opening her mouth widely, letting Kira poke around her gums lightly, observing the red gums at the back of her mouth
"Is she okay? Is it an infection?" Jaehyun asked with slight panic, forcing himself to immediately sober up.
"No...it looks like she's getting her 6 year molars" She smiled, to reassure him that it wasn't too much of a big deal before taking Jihye's temperature.
"But I don't want it" Jihye frowned
"I know love, they can be a pain. They're a fresh new set of teeth so they're coming up from your gums, that's why it hurts so much. But it'll only last a week at most" She said, reassuring her but Jihye looked a lot more uncomfortable with the pain
"She doesn't have a fever but it wouldn't hurt to see a dentist, her adult teeth are coming in quite early" Kira said, turning to Jaehyun who frowned at the statement
"Adult teeth? But...she's only a baby" he said, lips dropping as a helpless voice left his throat and she smiled, squeezing his hand reassuringly
"I'm not a baby!" Jihye whined and Jaehyun frowned
"Yes you are. And you always will be-"
"Thats not fair! I want to grow up and play with the older kids in the park" Jihye huffed making Jaehyun sigh with slight despair.
"No, please just stay as my little girl forever" Jaehyun groaned, engulfing her in an overly-affectionate hug, cheeks still red from the copious amounts of previously consumed alcohol. Kira chuckled and Jihye whined against him, giving into the hug regardless.
"Why were you two dancing on a school night?" Jihye asked, narrowing her eyes at Kira who had expressed to her earlier that day that she had to be in university tomorrow. Jaehyun and Kira sheepishly exchanged a glance with each other before turning back to Jihye, attacking her with tickles instead to change the subject.
"Come on, bed time" Jaehyun said strictly again, tucking her back into the covers.
"Can Kira sleep with me tonight?" She asked with big pleading eyes and Jaehyun hesitated a little bit
"No she's-"
"Maybe I should...just in case she gets a fever during the night you know?" She suggested from his side and Jaehyun sighed, realising he didn't even consider that his daughter's health could worsen over night.
"Okay yeah...thanks so much. Wake me up if anything happens okay?" He said, turning around to her with a relieved smile, knowing he could go get some rest in before the next morning
Kira smiled, getting into the bed on the other side, covering her body with the covers beside Jihye.
"Goodnight" Jaehyun smiled, while they chorused a goodnight back to him as he walked out of the room, turning off the light and closing the door behind him. And unbeknownst to them, he stayed behind the wooden door, smiling to himself as he heard their conversation
"Kira! I forgot to tell you, I'm in the school play for Christmas!" Jihye mentioned to Kira with big eyes
"Really?!" Kira asked, matching the excitement in her voice
"Yes I'm playing Mary, but oh my god, guess what?!" Jihye said, gossiping to the older girl who was always ready to hear drama no matter who it came from
"What?" She asked, fully invested into the story
"Kevin is playing Joseph!" Jihye exclaimed with a huff
"Wait...Kevin that made fun of you?" Kira clarified
"Yes! He's so yucky! I have to hold his hand!"
"No way—"
"Girls come on, please. It's 3am and you both need to be up for school tomorrow" Jaehyun said strictly, opening the door to let them know he could hear them.
"I don't want to hear another sound, understood?" He asked, narrowing his eyes at the two girls playfully and Kira rolled her eyes
"Okay daddy" Jihye said with a bit of guilt, burying herself under the duvet at his order
"Kira, understood?" Jaehyun said, teasing her a little with a smirk
"Yes daddy" she replied, rolling her eyes and poking out her tongue at him and he chuckled, teeth tugging at his bottom lip as he closed the door again, shutting off the lights and appliances around the house as he went to his bed.
"Kira...do you like my dad?" Jihye asked just above a whisper as she cuddled into Kira's hold
"Of course I do" Kira shrugged, not thinking about the question too much
"Would you get married to him?" She asked and Kira's eyes widened, an awkwardly chuckle leaving her lips
"Why would we get married?" Kira asked nervously, covering her cheeks with the covers
"Because you're a princess....and my daddy's a prince. You both need to get married to live happily ever after" Jihye pointed out and Kira smiled, patting the girl's head
"We're already living happily ever after baby...you make your dad so happy. You make me really happy too" She said, closing her eyes and nuzzling her head into the pillow as Jihye's imagination took over.
"Can I call you mommy then? Since you call me baby" Jihye asked, with innocence over the uncomfortable question
"I guess that's fair. You can call me whatever you want love" she mumbled, dozing off. But the words were remembered by the younger and influenced girl, who went to sleep that night with a more than satisfied smile.
