"Jie, you need to stop!" Prapa looked at her sister-in-law with bloodshot eyes.
Her son's wedding had gone down the drain and her son-in-law was missing. She already had a lot on her plate. The last thing she wanted to listen to at the moment was the rants of her sister-in-law.
She knew the Ruangwiwats were also having a hard time just like them because of Chimon's departure without announcement. The stress levels of both families were enormous.
The auspicious hour for the wedding was over and the guests started to get restless. Even though most of them were relatives, the situation was not positive.
"Are you telling me to shut up, Prapa?" Aruna looked at her in complete disbelief. She wanted to vent. She had met her son after so many years and her son had talked back to her, that too in front of everyone. This was unbearable for her. She wanted to let out her frustrations.
Initially, she didn't hate Nanon as much as she did now. The reason why she started hating Nanon so much and seeing him in a bad light was after Ohm left the family after marrying him.
She felt that Nanon had snatched away her son from her
"Yes!" Prapa retorted.
"Look at how your wife is talking to me Thep!" Aruna glared at her brother-in-law. "She has no respect for me, now!"
"Jie, please stop. All of us are tense here. We would really appreciate it if you don't add to the mess." Suthep blatantly took his wife's side. He too had enough of his sister-in-law's nonsense. He wanted some peace of mind.
Aruna was about to argue back but Suchart dragged her away. He too hated Nanon but he knew better than not to express their feelings in such a situation.
"Did they find him?" Prapa hurriedly asked as soon as Nani stepped inside the room.
"Khrab," Nani answered softly.
"Thank god," Prapa let out a sigh of relief. "So, where was he? Is he still mad at Perth?"
Nani didn't reply.
"What is it, Nani? Tell me!" Prapa had an obnoxious feeling. She shook Nani for an answer. "Is he unwilling to come back? Does he want to cancel this wedding altogether?"
Nani bit his lips, not uttering a word.
"Nani, everything is alright, right?" Suthep asked.
"They tracked down the cab in which he left last night." Nani gazed alternatively between the couple but didn't continue.
"Nani, tell us what happened, son." Suthep probed.
"The cab crashed into a truck."
Prapa felt all her strength leaving her body as she fell. Luckily, Suthep and Nani were quick enough to catch her before she fell to the ground.
Hearing the commotion, Suchart and Aruna rushed back. When they heard that Chimon was involved in an accident, they were shocked. Unlike the last time, Aruna didn't make any comments. Instead, she started tending to her sister-in-law who was weeping.
"How is his condition, son?" Suchart asked his son-in-law.
"I don't know for sure, Paa. The driver died on the spot. Mon was barely breathing when he was taken to the hospital. They said that he was undergoing surgery. From what they said, I feel that his condition is somewhat critical."
Suchart thought for a moment and said, "Give me the car keys. We are going to the hospital."
The other three elders nodded in agreement.
"That won't be necessary, Paa. Gemini and Fourth are already there. Ohm, Nanon and Perth were on their way there when I last called. The Ruangwiwats and Kirdpans have already headed to the hospital. If you guys go there as well, it would be too crowded."
"I don't care who went there, Nani. I want to see my child!" Prapa had already accepted Chimon as her own son. She loved him so much. She couldn't just sit back and wait for the news from the hospital.
"But~"
"We will go and take a look, son," Suchart patted Nani on his shoulder as he cut him off. "You stay here and take care of Bim and the elders. Also, please deal with the guests. Tell them that there wouldn't be any wedding today if they ask."
"Khrab," Nani nodded, unwillingly handing over the car keys.
The two couples headed to the hospital without wasting any more time. When they got to the hospital, there was a huge crowd outside the room as Nani predicted.
Ohm and Nanon had already reached, and so did the Ruangwiwats and Kirdpans. Everyone was waiting anxiously outside the operation theatre.
Fourth spotted his parents and made his way over.
"How is it, Fot? What did they say?" Prapa anxiously grabbed her son.
"The surgery is ongoing, Maa. The doctors haven't come out yet," Fourth replied as he supported his mother.
"Why is it taking so long?" Suthep enquired.
"Hia Mon had lost a lot of blood and the hospital's blood bank ran out of his group. Hia Ohm and Hia Non had to arrange for donors to get here and donate blood for the surgery to continue, Paa." Fourth explained.
"My child," Prapa covered her mouth and cried.
Fourth held his mother and took her to Chimon's parents.
Chimon's parents, Jida and Phon, were sitting in the waiting area. Both of them were pale. Chimon was their only son. If something happened to him, they would lose all their reasons to continue living.
Gemini was on his knees, trying to get Jida to drink some fruit juice. She hadn't eaten anything since the morning and her blood pressure dropped so quickly.
She leaned against Ple who was in no better condition than her. Ple too had a deep bond with Chimon and was on the verge of collapse. She kept muttering prayers, hoping that he would be alright.
As Jida noticed Prapa, she broke down. The two women hugged each other and cried hard. Ple and Aruna were trying to calm them down.
Not far away, Nanon was barely holding himself together. For him, Chimon was not just a friend, he was a brother from another mother. His whole body was trembling. He tried acting strong in front of others, but he failed miserably.
Ohm could see Nanon's situation. He too was worried. Even though he was close to Chimon, he was not as close to the latter as his husband. He let Nanon have his space.
In the meantime, he kept calling Perth. But the call never went through. It had long past the time that Perth should have reached there. Yet, there was no sign of him.
After so many calls, the call finally went through. "Perth, where are you?" Ohm asked as soon as the call connected.
"Hello?" He heard a stranger's voice.
The operation theatre opened, and a team of doctors appeared. Everyone in the waiting area rushed to them.
"Doctor, how is my son?" Jida asked anxiously.
"We tried our best, but we couldn't save him. We are sorry for your loss," the doctor said before excusing himself.
Loud wails were heard in the waiting area.
The phone in Ohm's hand fell to the ground with a thud as streams of tears flowed down his eyes.
