"Without regular injections, they're just men," Coulson said. "Once the doctors remove their cybernetic eyes, they'll be sensely back to normal."
"And I'll take care of the others," Borguez said. "One of the benefits from being me."
"Good job Borguez," Sanchez grinned.
A soldier and May came to Coulson, with Ward, all hand-cuffed.
"You got a chance to express all your feelings?" Coulson asked.
" Is he still breathing?" May answered.
"Guess she kept some of it to herself," Coulson replied.
"He's having trouble speaking. I think I fractured his larynx," May said.
"Oh, good."
"We're proud," Sanchez said.
Coulson walked up to Ward.
"Your attempt to cross off Fitz and Simmons failed, but Fitz may never be the same again. So I'm going to invent new ways to ruin the rest of your life. I will do whatever is necessary to get Hydra Intel from you, but your torture - it's going to be internal."
"And a little bit external."
"We'll make sure of that," Sanchez added.
"Sure. Some of that. But you devoted your entire life to a deranged narcissist who never gave a damn about anyone, and now he's dead. You've got the rest of your life to wrestle with the question - who are you without him?"
The soldier took Ward away, in the hope they never had to see him again.*
Outside, Skye and Sanchez found Mike, looking out over the building from the Woods.
"Why don't you go to him?" Skye asked.
"I don't want him to see what I've become," Mike replied.
"We can fix that," Sanchez said. "One simple illusion... It's enough to say at least goodbye for a while."
"Mike, he won't care about your burns," Skye said.
"That's not what I mean."
"Coulson wants to bring you in."
"He can access my hardwear, and watch my every move. Go ahead. I'll only be making my own actions."
"Whatever you did, you did it for Ace," Skye said.
"And what I do now... That will be for him too."
"You'll have my protection," Sanchez smiled.
*"Stupid, stupid, stupid, and cruel, and very stupid!"
They were back on the bus, in Coulson's office. And Coulson.... Coulson could finally get everything of his mind what he wanted to say.
"Not to forget you broke a lot of rules," Sanchez said.
"You could also have asked," Borguez said. "Be glad the Norns don't want us to punish you."
"I think the three of you have made your point," Fury replied.
"Why bring me back in the first place. Clearly I didn't think it was the best idea," Coulson said. "I warned you about people losing their minds."
"Agent May was on top of the situation, she says you're fine. Aren't you?" Fury said. "It was a break glass in case of emergency situation."
"Yes, but that emergency was supposed to be the fall of an Avenger," Coulson replied.
"Exactly," Fury answered. Coulson's face was all surprised. Sanchez and Borguez smiled. "And I'm damned glad I did it too. When you wanna build something you need a strong foundation. You know how few people I trust, Coulson."
"You can count them on one hand."
"And I'm not afraid to cut off fingers. The principle SHIELD was founded on was pure."
"Protection," May said.
"Protection," Fury said again. "One word. Sometimes to protect one man from himself, other times to protect the planet against an alien invasion from another universe. It's a broad job description."
"No need to tell me."
"But the belief that drives us all is the same. Whether it's one man, or all mankind."
"That they're worth saving," Coulson answered.
"Still... We'll be the only ones resurrecting people from now," Sanchez said.
"That truth lives inside you, Coulson," Fury said. "Before it was torn apart, S.H.I.E.L.D. was a lot of moving parts. Guys like you were the heart. Now you'll be the head."
Sanchez and Borguez started to smile. Fury took a little box from his pocket, smaller than his hand.
"What is it?" Coulson asked.
"Toolbox," Fury answered. "To help you build it back up."
"You want me to start over, rebuild S.H.I.E.L.D," Coulson answered, with open mouth.
"From scratch. Take your time, and do it right," Fury said. He walked to the exit of Coulson's office, and looked to May.
"You'll still have his back?"
"Of course," she replied.
"And so do we," Borguez and Sanchez said.
"There's no one else I trust with this," Fury said.
"Thank you, sir," Coulson said, a voice full of gratitude. "How do you... How should I proceed?"
"That's up to you, Director," Fury replied.
"And you sir, where you heading now?" May asked.
"Trading in my birds eye view for two solid feet on the ground. This is the last time you'll be seeing me for a stretch."
"Your going to disappear. Nowhere to be found," Coulson said.
"Nowhere? You know me better than that, Phil."
Fury took his glasses down, so they could see both of his eyes.
"I'll be everywhere."
