The first week slips by
I realize how much time
I've spent away from
Father and Aoi
and it surprises me
when I feel no longing
for either of them.

I grab my bag from the floor
pull on my coat
and lace up my shoes.

"Suki, lets go!"
My voice is livelier
and happier
I notice it myself
and I vow silently
that I will one day
move away with Suki
to live in Japan with Aunt Eevie

Suki rushes into the hallway and grabs her own bags,
"Aunt Eevie, we're off!"
She calls out as she twists
the old brass doorknob
to open the door.

"Be safe, girls. Make sure to hold hands when crossing any roads, okay?"

"Okay."

We chorus
stepping out
into the wet pavement
damp with last night's rain
and rushing down the road
