But I stand still
and watch as Orsai's broken body is lifted into the back of an ambulance.
We all pile hurriedly into Father's car and the only noises now are Aoi's weeping and praying mixing in with the grunting engine.
The kids have gone silent.
Shock. I think that's what they called it in my books.
I wonder if I'm in shock.
My hands s-s-shake violently and my skin feels clammy,
myheartisracing
and the sight of Orsai being hit replays itself
again and
again and
again and
I want to SCREAM
but the sound stays trapped in my head.
PART TWO:
The hospital reeks of antiseptic and it's cool, sterile interior does little to calm the shaking in my hands and the way my teeth
cl-l-lat-tter.
Aoi is a bubbling mess,
she screams at the receptionist and Father tries to calm her down.
They leave us
in the hospital's huge waiting room
and suddenly, I'm surrounded by wails of terror, of sorrow, of shock and I want to curl
away,
far
from
every
one's
eyes.

Taking a deep breath, I turn to the blubbering trio-
Suki stands deathly still by her chair, eyes vacant-
and push them towards the play area in the corner.
"Please don't be sad, Orsai will be just fine."
I'm a liar. I'm fibbing through my teeth,
reciting things I read from books.
"You'll see! She'll wake up and she might need a few bandages, but she'll be up in a jiffy and until then, you have to be brave for her alright?"
Lies tumble, settling on naive ears and soothing innocent hearts.
Soothing my heart.
