Arms of Safety

Aunt Eevie bustles through
our wide front door

with a dozen bags
looped over her arms

and with Miho and Zaina
scurrying behind her,
cheeks flushed from the cold,
dressed warmly for the chilly
British spring.

There are happy tears - Mother's -
and laughs of relief - Aunt Eevie's -
and bags being taken inside
and shoes getting toed off.

Before at last, we settle down
at the table,
buzzing with nervous energy,
Zaina and Miho and Suki and I,
exchanging shy smiles and
soft 'Hello's.

Aunt Eevie looks at me then,
and it's like all the bad emotions
and flitting thoughts,
screech to a halt
to be replaced with warmth,
with a sense of safety.

"Hello Harmony, it's been a while
my darling."
