They say home is where the heart is
Then I guess my home
Is with Aunt Eevie and her kids
I realize just how much I
Appreciate her
One afternoon
After school
She takes Suki, Zaina, Miho and I aside
And declares that,
From now on,
She'll start teaching us life skills
Because, she says, one day you're all going to have to learn how to take care of yourselves
She calls it
Independence
I call it
Revision
Because I already know
How to do most things
Like dusting
Like hoovering
Like sewing buttons
But then she takes us to the kitchen
Pulls out a huge bag of flour
And exclaims:
"Let's make some cookies!"
The deceleration leaves me confouded
Because it's the first time in my life
Someone's let me in the kitchen
Someone's encouraged me
to learn something
that I've always
