what you deserve

Mei and I hunch over my table
in the otherwise empty classroom
and work quietly
and quickly
on our homework.

The teacher handed
the stapled leaves of paper
in the morning
and announced,
like always,
that we had to finish it
by the end of the week.

Mei and I always end up
sliding in our papers
into our pigeon holes
before we leave
a whole six days earlier
than our 28 classmates

We know it's strange;
doing our homework
like this.
But it's grown into a habit

It's refreshing,
I think,
to have someone like Mei around
to have someone who
encourages and supports me

I look up at her

The bright afternoon sun
shines through the glazed windows
and reflects off of her shiny black hair.

"Haru-chan?"
Mei catches me staring
and smiles nervously at me,
"Is there something on my face?"

Her English had improved
and I feel like a proud teacher

I smile warmly and laugh
"No, there's nothing on your face
I was lost in thought, sorry."

"You know,
I like it when you laugh."
Mei grins

I like it too, Mei
I hope I can laugh more
because I'm tired of being sad.
I'm tired of being lonely.
I want to be better
I want to be a better friend to you.

You deserve the best,
you honestly do.
