The spite in my voice
Take me by surprise
But I mask it well
I don't puff out my chest
Like some wannabe hero
But I stand my ground
And fix the four of them
With the iciest glare I can manage
Like Aoi does when
I break a glass trying to wash up
Or like Father used to do with Mum
"Who the f * c k do you think you are?"
The girl's voice is shrill
And her language is repugnant
But I don't waver,
I don't reply
Soon she gives up trying to rouse
Any reaction from me
And turns to leave
Her friends follow her lead
I look down at Mei
And breathe a sigh of relief
When I find she's uninjured
"Did they take your lunch money?" I ask.
That seems to snap her
Out of her haze
And into the real world
She looks up at me
Brown eyes sparkling
And I realize she doesn't speak English
I bend down on my knees
