Through my mind
Like shock waves after a blast"Do you girls want some peanut butter and jam sandwiches?"
She speaks to us in English
And not our native language
It makes me feel almost angry
But I brush it off
because I'm more curious than sad,"What's peanut butter?"
Her eyes nearly pop out
Of her pale face.
She wastes no time and
Flings open a cupboard and
Pulls out a plastic jar,"It's sweet, do you want to try some?"
To think that at that moment
On my mother's kitchen counter
My wings had started to twitch
And shake, and tremble
With the desire
To fly
