When we go back
to 55 Rosewood road,
Mother leads us upstairs
and smiles at us like she loves us.

"I have something I want to show you two,"
Her eyes are soft
but I keep my guard up

"When's Father going to pick us up?
When are we going back?"

"Come on upstairs, girls!"
Mother acts like she doesn't hear
and my heart speeds up.
I rush up the stairs,
Suki behind me,
and pull on her sleeve.

"I want Father." I demand
not because I feel safe
around him
but because he's all I know
and he's familiar
and I know how to act
and how to feel
when I'm around him.
"I want to go home."

"Harmony," Mother sighs
and her shoulders droop
like she's wilting like a dead flower
"You're father," She pauses
and doesn't realize how it kills me
to wait for her to speak,
"You're father wants you to stay here.
With me."

"For how long?"
I wonder if I can handle a night,
then I remember,
"I have school tomorrow."

"He wants to to stay forever."
