The day passes in a
beautiful haze of happiness
and the house is filled with
the smell of firewood asMother turns on the fireplace
for the first time since we
moved.A part of me knows
that now I'll always connect
the sound of flickering flamesto this warm feeling that
flows through my being."Mama, when are you gonna

her brother's mouth
and cuts him off."Miho!" She hisses.
"It's a surprise, you'll ruin it!""What? What is it?" Suki asks
and looks between them
with wide brown eyes.Aunt Eevie smiles knowingly
from her spot on our sofa
and beckons us closer."Harmony, Suki, come here.
I have something I want to give you."I blink in surprise,
then walk over to sit next to her."Yes, Aunt Eevie?"
She reaches into the bags at her side,
her smile never fading,
and pulls out two identical boxes
before passing them to us.I look at Mother for permission,
she smiles at me and nods
so I slowly peel back the paper
that's artfully covering the box.Suki gasps next to me,
but I ignore her, because in my hands,
is a brand new
cellphone.
